Today sees an addition to the Philadelphia season finale “Three-Fisted Tales”, as Helios steps into the ring with HUSTLE superstar Yujiro Kushida. Kushida, as many may know, is a lucha-oriented flyer with incredible athletic skills. He’ll be looking to use his mix of strength and speed to knock Helios down a peg and give him only his second singles loss in CHIKARA in his two year career (the first against Incognito in the finals of the 2008 Rey de Voladores tournament). While it may not read like it at first, this is a huge matchup and a big chance for both men to prove something to the other’s home promotion.

In other news, it’s official that Eddie Kingston is out for this weekend’s “Cibernetico Incredible” event in Philly, where he was scheduled to take on Big Japan’s Ryuichi Kawakami. Kingston was on the receiving end of some hellacious blows from Sami Callihan this past weekend at CZW’s “Severed Ties”, which left him with a horribly broken nose. CHIKARA reported on Twitter that King is headed under the knife to repair the injury, and as such, will miss out on the much anticipated matchup this weekend with Kawakami. A replacement will be selected for that match, which may or may not be announced ahead of time; King’s status for the November events is still unknown.

Also, some small news for that card: the seventh and final matchup for the event is going to be kept secret by the CHIKARA office until it happens. You’ll be able to see what it is if you hop on this very site on Sunday for our live results!

We apologize once again for being incredibly late with this update; things have been going on behind the scenes with this site, so that’s sort of taken priority. However, we’re back today to play catch-up once again. Let’s dive right in!

“An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World” ~ October 17, 2009 in Easton, PA

The four-way elimination tag we talked up last week has been filled out with two more teams looking to build up points for title contention. Dasher Hatfield and his new partner Sugar Dunkerton are going to get a prime opportunity to get a feel for one another on a huge stage, as they could launch from zero to three points in the first time they’ve teamed together. While the likelihood of this is slim, stranger things have happened in CHIKARA. Meanwhile, the fourth team represents F.I.S.T. – while the group already has three points, Gran Akuma being sidelined indefinitely has led to Icarus and Chuck Taylor putting their names out there for contention. This is the same duo that lost the titles for F.I.S.T. the last time Gran Akuma was out for an extended injury, so while they’ve been successful in the past, they’ve been known to blow it on the big stage. Let’s see how they do in Easton!

It’s incredibly rare that we get three title matches on any one card in wrestling (well, aside from the WWE, but having a hundred belts diminishes the significance of such an event), but Easton is going to get that honor in October as Mike Quackenbush defends his NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship against Sal Rinauro. Rinauro was incredibly cocky in making the claim in Nashua for Smart Mark’s cameras that he was going to come to CHIKARA, take Quackenbush’s title and run CHIKARA his way. Quack never backs down from a challenge, and as such, we’ve got this matchup!

“Cibernetico Incredible” ~ October 18, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA

The batting order for this year’s Torneo Cibernetico has been determined by team captains Fire Ant and Soldier Ant, and the opening go around the rotation sees some interesting matchups. Starting off the match will be Fire and Mike Quackenbush, who have not been opposite each other in the ring since May of 2007 when Quack put Fire Ant away in a trios matchup with a top rope Tiger Driver. After that will be Hallowicked and Jigsaw, a storied competitive rivalry between two of the top students that dates back many years. There’s also a chance that an early tag out will also see a very early matchup between both members of the Super Smash Bros. and the Young Bucks, and another chance of a matchup like that later on in the first rotation with Green Ant and Soldier Ant, then again with Soldier and Fire. Not to pull a Gabe Sapolsky here, but this match needs no hype – 16 of the best wrestlers in CHIKARA squaring off to be “el Rey de Torneo Cibernetico!”

Sal Rinauro has another big challenge ahead of him in October, as he’s facing both trainers of the CHIKARA Wrestle Factory – in Philadelphia, he goes one on one with Claudio Castagnoli. There’s a chance that this could be an NWA World Junior title match if Rinauro gets the upset over Quack the night before. Could we potentially see two title changes in one weekend?

“Three-Fisted Tales” ~ November 22, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA

Another match that needs no hype – the Respect Match between Claudio Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston. The goal of the match is simple: beat your opponent until he tells the world that he respects you. Kingston wrote a very powerful blog claiming why he wanted this match, which essentially provides as a backstory to this match better than we could write in this space. Check it out!

We’ll be back more often with these updates. Promise!

Well! We take a couple of days off after the exhausting New England weekend, and the CHIKARA offices don’t cut us any slack. This update alone will hype up two new matches, a blog, a new Podcast and some more little nuggets of info. Let’s not waste time; here come the updates!

First off – new champs! The Colony have won the Campeonatos de Parejas in Nashua on Sunday, defeating the Osirian Portal in two straight falls. Wasting no time, their first defense has been signed and it’s the main event of Easton’s “An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World” as Fire Ant and Soldier Ant square off against the only currently healthy duo with three points, The Roughnecks of Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood. While the Roughnecks have likely been preparing for three falls with the Portal, the ants are looking to prove that they’re not going to be one-and-done like the last tecnico team to hold the belts, the Super Smash Bros. Rumor is that, by the time you read this, the Roughnecks will have some words for the Colony in a Podcast Special Update. We’ll have that video for you here tomorrow!

While Brodie and the Grizz are going to be prepping for three falls of action in Easton, their fellow Roughneck Eddie Kingston is getting himself ready for the following night, where he’ll be taking on Big Japan’s newest rookie sensation Ryuichi Kawakami! Making his debut in December of 2008, Kawakami, a trainee of current Big Japan tag champ (and CHIKARA alum) Daisuke Sekimoto, brings a lot to the table despite being relatively new to the ring. A hype video displaying his sheer power and strength is right on the other side of this link – check it out now.

Sara del Rey has written a very interesting blog here, voicing her recent frustrations with the competition she’s been given recently. Daizee Haze recently voiced similar complaints, so perhaps something is in store for these two down the road.

The latest edition of the Podcast-a-Go-Go, featuring King of Trios 2009 action such as the Soul Touchaz vs. the UnStable and the F1RST Family vs. F.I.S.T., can be seen here

See you tomorrow with more on the latest in CHIKARA!

Yes indeed. Three more matches on the cards for the upcoming shows in just a couple of weeks!

SuperTemple

The first match added to the New England weekend will take place on the West Springfield show and sees the new Young Lions Cup Champion Player Dos return to tag team competition alongside Player Uno as the Super Smash Bros., as they will be taking on Order of the Neo-Solar Temple members Delirious and UltraMantis Black. With many seeing the SSB as being on a collision course, the Order will be intending to rebound after falling in the 4-way elimination tag at the Young Lions Cup and taking advantage of any animousity or jealousy between Uno and Dos would have to be a primary objective. However, Uno and Dos cannot be counted out as they are former Campeones and have shown in the past that they can overcome any issues to succeed as a duo.

TenManTag

Secondly, Nashua will play host to a tremendously wrestle-tastic ten-man tag featuring a number of men who’ve never even teamed before, and a couple who CHIKARA fans are just getting familiar with, as The Future Is Now members Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen and Lince Dorado will be joining forces with Dasher Hatfield, Green Ant and Carpenter Ant against Vin Gerard, STIGMA, Colin Delaney, Jagged & Shane Matthews. While Jimmy and Lince are well-versed in CHIKARA’s signature multi-man tags, having wrestled numerous trios, atomicos and even Ciberneticos in their time, their team-mates are not so experienced. This will mark Green Ant’s third match in CHIKARA and Carpenter Ant’s second, and Carpenter’s in-ring debut was a singles match. Dasher Hatfield is not much more experienced, as most of his CHIKARA matches have been singles bouts and any forays into team matches haven’t yielded much success. On the other hand, their opponents are made up of two factions – 2.0 and the UnStable – and both are extremely experienced in this sort of match. It should also be noted that Green Ant and Carpenter Ant don’t appear to have been getting on well as of late, so they can hardly be considered a cohesive Colony unit. It’ll be the leadership of Lince and Jimmy that decides whether the tecnicos sink or swim in what should be quite the exciting little match.

SolarNecks

Finally, the Order will also have a tag match in Nashua, as Delirious and Mantis will once again be looking to pick up a win, this time against Roughnecks members Eddie Kingston and Grizzly Redwood. This match is quite interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, Grizzly Redwood is currently one half of a championship contending tag team, as Grizz and Brodie Lee await the surviving Campeones coming out of the New England weekend, and while Brodie has often treated Grizz like a “little brother”, Kingston has shown little tolerance for Redwood’s physical inadequacies, often throwing him around and using him as a weapon. It is also a “rematch” of sorts from February, as Mantis has a chance to get revenge on the Roughnecks for preventing the Order from participating in King of Trios. Not only that, but it almost revives the Incoherence vs. Roughnecks feud, although Delirious being brainwashed changes the situation just a little bit. However, the most important thing – at least from the perspective of any Order fan – has to be that a win here and a win over the Super Smash Bros. would do wonders for getting the Order a title shot in the very near future. Both of their opponents in New England have issues, with the SSB perhaps having problems with jealousy and the Roughnecks not being on the exact same page, so Mantis has to think 2 points here are at least attainable.

Shane Hollister Bret Race Colin Delaney

Catching up with the week’s news, it’s only appropriate to update everyone on the entrants into this year’s Young Lions Cup of which there are three new ones! First up is yet another talent from the Midwest – Iowa, to be specific – and a wrestler that’s looking to follow in the footsteps of many of his influences, including Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin and Tyler Black. This man is Shane Hollister, a young man who’s worked extensively in the past for AAW in Berwyn, Illinois, and more recently IWA Mid-South.

Joining Hollister in the Young Lions Cup is quite possibly the greatest of unknowns in this year’s competition. Going by the name Bret “Restle” Race, even CHIKARA has said that they know quite literally nothing about him. They don’t even have a photograph, so this really does bring into question Leonard Chikarason’s research when it comes to YLC participants. He does however have a bare-bones MySpace page, and there are rumours circling that his name may be an anagram for one of CHIKARA’s more interesting characters. Perhaps the subtitle for this website’s message board is truer than first thought…

And finally, a regular face to CHIKARA fans becomes the penultimate participant in this year’s YLC: The UnStable’s Colin Delaney. This is actually Colin’s first Young Lions Cup despite making his CHIKARA debut in 2006 and he’ll be looking to join his stablemates STIGMA and Vin Gerard as well as his “baby brother” Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen as holders of the Young Lions Cup.

In addition to the tournament action over YLC weekend, night 3 of the weekend will see Claudio Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston clash in a continuation of their growing rivalry. Kingston will be coming off a short injury lay-off for this match – an injury forcing him off the upcoming Reading card – and Claudio has shown his willingness to exploit injuries to defeat Kingston in the past (see their March 2007 match), but Kingston has never gone down without a fight and coming off a win over Claudio at “Aniversario Yang” he may feel he has the momentum coming into this one.

onemotime

Following Eddie Kingston’s challenge on the CHIKARA Podcast-A-Go-Go Update just a few days ago, Claudio Castagnoli has accepted and the two men will meet in one of the highlight matches on the upcoming Philadelphia card. Both men are among the top singles wrestlers in all of CHIKARA and both trained at the Chikara Wrestle Factory but this grudge apparently only really developed at King of Trios when Claudio’s Team Uppercut overcame Kingston’s Roughnecks in a match deemed to be “embarassing” by Kingston. However, the two have actually had issues for many years, dating back to the early days of the Eddie Kingston vs. Chris Hero feud in CHIKARA and CZW. Their first singles match in CHIKARA occurred in late March of 2007 in Kingston’s comeback match from a broken ankle, and Claudio came out on top of that by going after the injury and using a heel hook for the submission. More recently, they wrestled last November in Wallingford in a match again won by Castagnoli. “The King of Diamonds” has often been called “a man who wears his hear on his sleeve” and he is not a man who takes losses easily, so he will be well aware of Castagnoli’s record against him, so he’ll be out to “right that wrong” in Philly.

cannonreturns

Meanwhile, finishing up the weekend is another singles match for Easton between “The Anarchist” Arik Cannon and Incoherence member Delirious. Both of these men really made their names at the same time, coming into some success in 2004/2005 in IWA Mid-South, where Cannon won the Heavyweight Title and Delirious won the Light-Heavyweight Title on multiple occasions. Both have also achieved a lot in CHIKARA, Cannon holding the Young Lions Cup in 2006 while Delirious held Los Campeonatos de Parejas last year with Hallowicked. Cannon is returning to CHIKARA after a massively impressive weekend at King of Trios where he dropped El Generico in singles competition, while nobody really knows where Delirious is at – quite literally – following his apparent kidnapping at the hands of the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple last month.

dgatomico1

The second participant has been added to the Dragon Gate USA atomico showcase match and it is another member of the tecnico squad. With the addition of Fire Ant to the 8-man match, his tag team partner in The Colony, Soldier Ant, has also been added. Soldier brings a lot to the table, having teamed with Fire Ant to win Tag World Grand Prix 2008 and challenge for Los Campeonatos de Parejas in January. While his singles credentials are not quite as decorated as those of his tag team partner, Soldier has challenged for the Young Lions Cup in the past as well as going toe-to-toe with the likes of Eddie Kingston, so his ability should not be doubted by anyone.

Chuck Taylor has a new blog on the CHIKARA site addressing the upcoming F.I.S.T. vs. Colony match.

CAW vs. Eddie Kingston

It’s been a week since an update, and we’re back at last! Hey, we only report the news, we don’t make it. The first match has been added to the Aniversario weekend, and it’s rather appropriate considering this will mark the 7th anniversary of the first ever CHIKARA show as it will pit one of CHIKARA’s early stars against one of the newer characters. Back in late 2002 when CHIKARA moved to St. John’s Auditorium, Eddie Kingston debuted alongside BlackJack Marciano as the Wildcards. Now, in 2009, “The King of Diamonds” is stronger, tougher, colder and much more dangerous. His opponent debuted at the 2007 King of Trios tournament, losing to Chuck Taylor. Create-A-Wrestler has gone through two fan-created gimmicks in additional to his CAW persona but has never really stepped up to the plate and risen up the card. This will be his chance, as he’ll be well aware of what a strong performance against a man like the King will do for a career (ask Tim Donst). However, Kingston will not be so happy with that. In the past he has stated he wants to “burst the bubbles” of the new CHIKARA wrestlers, such as Soldier Ant, Lince Dorado and the aforementioned Donst. Will CAW be the next man on that list, or will he pull off the biggest win of his career thus far?

Shill! The Young Lions Cup Champion Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen was on the Dr. Keith show this week, talking masks, Colin and all sorts of other good stuff!

Philadelphia will see a feud renewed in late April, as Hallowicked will again wage war against former team-mate Eddie Kingston, this time in trios action. Hallowicked will be bringing his protege Frightmare and his long-time ally Delirious to complete the Incoherence team, while King will be one-third of the Roughnecks, alongside Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood. This will mark the first confrontation between Hallowicked and Brodie since January, where Brodie brutally attacked Hallowicked with Frightmare’s chain after a tag team match. Not only that, but Brodie has continued to flaunt the “Incoherence-era” Hallowicked mask that he stole many months ago. “The Graveyard Warrior” will be looking to even the odds in April.

Other grudges also exist within the match. Frightmare will be intending to show Brodie that he is not a pushover, even though Brodie destroyed him in both of their previous matches. Grizzly Redwood will be out to show Frightmare that his loss to the rookie in the aforementioned January tag match was purely luck.

Philadelphia has proven to be one of the more notable locations when it comes to Eddie Kingston vs. Hallowicked. In April 2007 Eddie Kingston completed a turn to the rudo side when he ambushed Hallowicked before a scheduled match, blasting him with three Yakuza kicks. Later in that year Kingston battered former CHIKARA wrestler Ricochet after placing a Hallowicked mask over his head. In November on the season finale shows Kingston defeated Hallowicked, winning their feud. Heck, even in 2008 there were issues, as Eddie Kingston, Joker and Ruckus cheated to eliminate Hallowicked, Delirious and Helios from the King of Trios tournament. The Roughnecks were even born out of the mutual dislike for Hallowicked shared by Brodie and King. The wounds still haven’t healed between these two, and they’re sure to be torn back open in Philly.

Also apparently being set up for the Philly show, he’s Vin Gerard and he’s in a rage, he wants Glacier and he wants him in a cage.

There will be international participation on the April 25 show according to this banner, as Shadow Phoenix will be wrestling on at least one event. For those of you who may be asking “Who?”, here’s a bit of info. Recently Phoenix has been wrestling in Australia, at least as of December 2008. He’s perhaps best known as Murcielago from Toryumon X, a member of a trio of wrestling cars known as “Los Carros Exoticos”. When Toryumon X closed he moved on to Michinoku Pro as 119 Inoue Taijin, then Osaka Pro as Flash Moon, before leaving to become a freelancer. Since leaving Osaka Pro he has toured Australia as both Shadow Phoenix and Murcielago, and now it appears he will be making a rare North American appearance for CHIKARA!

New CHIKARA podcast, featuring Crossbones, Ryan Eagles & Madison Eagles vs. Fire Ant, Soldier Ant & Jessie McKay and “Black Angel” Jaki Numazawa (BJW) vs. UltraMantis Black from the Global Gauntlet. Apparently we have seen the last of King of Trios. They slipped that in there, SADFACE.
