Following their eliminations from the King of Trios tournament last night, four of the more popular wrestlers in the tournament have thrown their hat into the ring that is Rey de Voladores 2009! Joining Fire Ant and Player Dos in the second qualifier match will be one half of the Young Bucks, Matt Jackson, and making up three-quarters of the first qualifier is El Generico, Nick Jackson and DDT star Kota Ibushi! All four of these men impressed greatly on night one, but they will inevitably look at that KOT run as a failure. RDV offers a chance for one of them to make up for that failure by showing they are the premier high-flyer of the weekend.

The second opening round match in the 2009 King of Trios tournament brings together two of the top contenders for winning the entire competition, as Team PWG of El Generico and the PWG Tag Team Champions the Young Bucks will attempt to take down the ever-dominant Osirian Portal of Escorpion Egipcio and the CHIKARA Campeones de Parejas Amasis & Ophidian. The Portal will be out to prove that not only are they the strongest trio on the independents today but they will also be intending to show that they are the better tag team champions. Unfortunately, as last year’s tournament showed, any team lead by El Generico is not willing to go down without a fight.

If there’s one thing we know about CHIKARA tag tournaments, it’s that every promotion from around the world is itching to send a squad in to take the tournament home for themselves, and this year is seemingly no different. The first outsider team for 2009’s King of Trios tournament was announced today, a trio representing California’s Pro Wrestling Guerilla promotion. El Generico, an independent wrestling favorite and a veteran of the CHIKARA tournaments, steps in the ring at KOT 2K9, teaming with Matt and Nick Jackson, the Young Bucks. The Jackson brothers are the current PWG Tag Team Champions, Generico is a former PWG World and 4-time Tag Team Champion, at one point holding both main PWG titles at the same time, so it’s blatant that PWG has assembled a strong, exciting trio that has all the potential in the world to take the entire tournament; we’ll see if they can do it on March 27-29 in Philadelphia.
