The first main event of season nine has been signed, sealed and delivered to the fans, and while CHIKARA’s management may be more corrupt than Congress, they surely haven’t given up on giving the fans quality wrestling matches.

Team F.I.S.T.Icarus and Gran Akuma – have been sitting on three points for quite a while, dating back to September when they were originally scheduled to get a title shot against former champions the Osirian Portal in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, fate had its way with Gran Akuma’s physical well-being and put a delay to F.I.S.T.’s hopes of regaining the Campeonatos de Parejas. In that time? Fire Ant and Soldier Ant capitalized on F.I.S.T.’s delays and the Portal’s injuries and grabbed up the belts for themselves.

Now, these two duos face off again, adding yet another chapter to their storied rivalry. We all know the history between these two squads is deep. F.I.S.T. are the most dangerous duo in all of CHIKARA, and The Colony know this better than anyone. They took out their partner Worker Ant with one quick move on the outside. They won King of Trios, a tournament that The Colony were heavy favorites to take home. Even though they didn’t win the match and eventually lost their hair, F.I.S.T. even took The Colony to limits they had never reached before in a lucha de apuestas. Now, they look to take home the belts one more time.

January 31st. Philadelphia. Team F.I.S.T. vs. The Colony. One more time.

You know the name of tomorrow’s event in West Springfield? Yeah. “Man Makes Plans, and God Laughs”. Well, God’s clearly a regular old Mr. Chuckles this evening because he has chosen to play havoc with this weekend’s cards. It was announced earlier today that Gran Akuma cannot participate due to an injury suffered in training. As a result, the Osirian Portal’s Campeonatos de parejas-related double jeopardy has been halved, as Icarus & Gran Akuma have opted to cash in their 3 points at a later date. This means that there is no longer any ambiguity: Nashua on Sunday will indeed see the rematch from “Revelation X” as the Osirian Portal of Amasis and Ophidian will defend their belts against The Colony’s Fire Ant & Soldier Ant. This marks the ants’ second title shot but their first under standard Campeonatos rules, as their previous match was a one fall contest.

FrightChuck

However, another question comes to mind: What about the West Springfield main event? Well, there’s been some shuffling there too. With Akuma on the shelf, he will be replaced by fellow F.I.S.T. member Chuck Taylor alongside Icarus as they go against Amasis and Ophidian. However, unlike the previous time where Taylor had to replace Akuma, this will not be a tag title contest and will perhaps serve as a sign of things to come for the eventual title match. In addition to that, the singles match in Nashua between Frightmare and Chuck Taylor has been modified, as Icarus will team with Taylor again to face Frightmare and his mentor Hallowicked.

TFIStable

With Chuck now moved into the main event of West Springfield, this leaves an opening in another match on the card, as now Vin Gerard and STIGMA need a third man in their trios match against Lince Dorado, Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen and Mike Quackenbush. With Colin Delaney out of the picture due to his singles match with Dasher Hatfield, there is no natural replacement for Chuck. The mystery man has not been named as of yet as the rudos will be given a partner on the night via the infamous random draw.

We haven’t updated the site in a few days, but the main CHIKARA website was hacked a couple of days ago. The front page redirected to a new website containing a YouTube vide, while every other link was disabled. The video, which can be viewed here, appears to feature the mystery man in white from “Young Lions Cup VII: Night 3″, who states that UltraMantis Black has something that belongs to his family. Mantis must return this thing “or be destroyed”.

Promos from the Young Lions Cup DVDs are up here!

In CHIKARA, tradition is normally that the big grudge matches are held off for the end of the season. However, this year has been full of surprises, and the latest one is something the fans have been begging to see for quite a while as a month earlier than some may have expected – Jigsaw and Gran Akuma are set to do battle in singles action in Easton. The two men have had sort of a competitive rivalry that’s gotten a bit personal in recent months, dating back to April’s “The Bobliographon” event, where Akuma pinned Jig with a Rubik’s Cube in a big atomico main event. It happened again a month later in Easton at the end of a trios match between F.I.S.T. and Jigsaw/Lince Dorado/Helios, this time with the Yoshi Tonic.

From there, things took a turn for the personal. The two saw each other across the ring a few months later at Dragon Gate USA’s “Open the Historic Gate” show; Jig ended up getting the win this time over Akuma’s teammate Icarus. However, after the match, Akuma took his frustrations out on a downed Mike Quackenbush, who was receiving a beating from Dragon Gate’s YAMATO after Quack laid out a challenge to the DG locker room. Six days later, Icarus and Akuma squared off with Quack and Jigsaw at “Never Kneel at the Altar of Conformity” in Reading; F.I.S.T. reigned supreme that night in one of the best and most heated matches on the show. Most recently, at this past weekend’s “Open the Untouchable Gate” DGUSA event, Jigsaw and Akuma saw themselves once again across the ring from one another in tag action, with Quackenbush on Jig’s side and YAMATO on Akuma’s. While the tecnicos got the win after YAMATO accidentally speared Akuma, leaving him open for Quackenbush, it was Jigsaw who was laid out earlier in the match as the evil duo took out his knee.

Needless to say, this singles confrontation coming up at “An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World” has a lot on the line. What was once a competitive rivalry between two men has become a battle of personal pride between two warriors. A victory in singles competition for either man holds a lot of value in this war between the two, and if Akuma has his way, he might just aim for more than a victory; he may very well try to put Jigsaw on the sidelines for good.

Speaking of wars, Crossbones has spoken out on his feelings on the apparent war that is coming for Ultramantis Black. He posted a blog today on the CHIKARAPro.com site, which you can read here.

Last night’s Dragon Gate USA show in Chicago saw many great matches, including an outstanding contest between Davey Richards and Shingo Takagi, plus Bryan Danielson vs. Naruki Doi and the Young Bucks against current Twin Gate champions Genki Horiguchi & Ryo Saito. However, being CHIKARAFans.com, it’s important that we focus on the CHIKARA involvement, which saw Mike Quackenbush & Jigsaw looking to avenge the events of Philadelphia against YAMATO & Gran Akuma. They did end up winning after YAMATO accidentally speared Akuma and Quack pinned the F.I.S.T. member with the QD2. However, the rudos had the last laugh after the match. With Jigsaw incapacitated due to damage inflicted on his knee during the match, YAMATO grabbed Quack and clamped the sleeper hold onto him, forcing him to pass out. However, help came in the form of “The Nightmare Warrior” Hallowicked, who rushed to the ring to save his trainer. Once again the tecnicos have achieved the pinfall victory but the rudos have escaped with the last laugh.

Speaking of Hallowicked, he participated in the second FRAY! match, alongside Young Lions Cup participant Prince Mustafa Ali and former YLC champion Arik Cannon. Entering first, Wicked lasted all the way until the end before falling to Johnny Gargano.

It’s not a good time to be an Egyptian in CHIKARA. Not at all. The worst that could probably have happened for the Osirian Portal in their attempts to remain the Campeones de Parejas has indeed happened, and they will be particularly busy in September if they intend to remain the top duo in CHIKARA. Following yesterday’s announcement that Gran Akuma and Icarus will be cashing in their three points on September 12 in West Springfield, Fire Ant and Soldier Ant of The Colony have added even more pressure by announcing that they will also be cashing in – one day later in Nashua. This will be Fire and Soldier’s first title shot since the Portal defeated them in a one-fall match in January and one could argue that this puts them in an even better spot, as whoever wins in West Springfield will immediately be in the crosshares of the ants. Also of note is that whatever the outcome of the first match, The Colony will have much history with the winners, coming off that title match in January and the F.I.S.T./Colony hair vs. mask match in May.

CampeonatosBout

Just a few days ago Leonard F. Chikarason brought the hammer down on the current situation with Los Campeonatos de Parejas, announcing that the three teams currently in possession of 3 points towards a title shot at the Osirian Portal will all receive individual shots on a first come, first serve basis. As a result of this, West Springfield’s upcoming show will be headlined by the first of those title matches, as Amasis and the returning Ophidian defend the gold against the second and longest-reigning Campeones in CHIKARA history: Gran Akuma and Icarus of F.I.S.T. Chikarason’s decision is an extremely mixed bag for the Portal because with great risk comes great reward.

This route means that they will have three title defences in a short space of time and they will need to defeat all three to emerge as the top team in CHIKARA, ala a gauntlet match. However, if they were to do that they were surpass Hallowicked & Delirious as the best team in the history of the titles in terms of successful title defences, as they would have 6 to Incoherence’s 5. On the other hand, Akuma and Icarus have to see this as a chance to turn the tide that has been dogging them since they won King of Trios, as highlighted by the hair loss at Aniversario Yang. F.I.S.T. members are notorious for a lack of remorse and with Ophidian coming off a broken arm they will obviously be going after that. Can the Portal weather the storm and continue to reign the tag team division in CHIKARA or can Akuma and Icarus become the first two-time Campeones de Parejas?

Here’s an amusing picture of The Colony perhaps auditioning for a part in a sequel to Reservoir Dogs.

Dragon Gate USA “opened the Historic Gate” last night, holding their first show before a packed house at the Arena. The main event saw the holder of both the Brave and Dream Gate, Naruki Doi, overcome the man he defeated to win the Dream Gate, Shingo Takagi, with his signature Muscular Bomb, underlined the fact that he is the man to beat in all of Dragon Gate nowadays. Also on the card was a battle between YAMATO and BxB Hulk (with Daizee Haze acting as one of Hulk’s dancers!), a show-stealing match between the Young Bucks and CIMA/Susumu Yokosuka, and a killer singles battle between Masato Yoshino and Dragon Kid!

However, the biggest news from a CHIKARA perspective has to be the post-match events of the CHIKARA showcase match. The match itself was a grand showcase of what has brought CHIKARA to the dance, if you will, with high-flying, fast paced action all over the place, ending in Jigsaw pinning Icarus with his signature Jig ‘n’ Tonic to earn the tecnicos a big win. Once the match had finished and 7 of the 8 wrestlers had gone to the back, “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush grabbed the microphone and introduced a tribute video for the legendary Jorge “Skayde” Rivera. He also added that perhaps a Dragon Gate vs. CHIKARA match should take place in the future, which brought out KAMIKAZE member YAMATO. Despite a recent change of heart back home in Japan, the ever-devious YAMATO lured Quack into a false sense of security by implying he respected Quack before fouling Quackenbush and adding (via translation) that he had no respect for Quack, CHIKARA or Skayde. Jigsaw attempted to save Quack but also got attacked, drawing F.I.S.T. member Gran Akuma from the backstage area. Jigsaw appealed to him, saying that YAMATO had disrespected all of the CHIKARA wrestlers, but instead of helping him Akuma chose to side with YAMATO, putting a beating on Quack and Jigsaw. Cheech and Cloudy attempted to make the save but were quickly sent to the floor, and the YAMATO/Akuma alliance was finally sent packing by the trio of Fire Ant, Soldier Ant and Lince Dorado. With Jigsaw earning the win in this match that means that he will now be on the second DGUSA card in Chicago (along with Quack), so it’ll be interesting to see if those two challenge YAMATO and Akuma to a tag match.

Other CHIKARA participation saw the aforementioned Lince Dorado overcome Cheech, Cloudy and several others en route to an impressive victory in the FRAY match after using his signature Shooting Star Press.

It was also announced that on November 28, 2009 DGUSA will return to the Arena with a one-night tournament to decide the holder of the Open the Freedom Gate, the top singles title in DGUSA.

CHIKARA Fans readers, the petition has worked – Stinky the Homeless Guy, Inter Species Wrestling’s resident hobo, has been added to the Young Lions Cup tournament as the 24th and final entrant! A recent string of bad luck has befallen the homeless hero, as his best friend Flip D. Berger was brainwashed and turned against him by Moohammad, to the point where Flip defeated Stinky last weekend for his ISW Other Title (Flip then handed the belt over to Moohammad). However, despite his poor luck, he’s been fortunate enough to be brought along on somewhat of a US tour, beginning the weekend prior to Young Lions Cup weekend with ISW’s US debut, “The Worst That Could Happen” in East Hartford, CT. Will Stinky be able to turn the tides around and bring the Cup home?

If he does, he’ll have some stiff competition as we all know. Thankfully for him and the other 23 competitiors, they now have somewhat of an idea as to what to look forward to, as CHIKARA announced who will be competing on nights one and two today! The field has been split as follows:

Night One: Create-a-Wrestler, Prince Mustafa Ali, Lince Dorado, Jason Hades, Hydra, Colin Delaney, Brandon Michael Thomas, Tim Donst, El Leonino, Frightmare, Stinky the Homeless Guy, Grizzly Redwood

Night Two: Yellow Dog, Soldier Ant, Cloudy, Darin Corbin, Ryan Cruz, Player Uno, Player Dos, Trik Davis, Carpenter Ant, Shane Hollister, Chimaera, Bret Race

Mike Quackenbush is making his return to wrestling next weekend at the big Dragon Gate USA debut in Philadelphia, but he makes his return to CHIKARA the weekend after as he teams with Jigsaw to take on Icarus and Gran Akuma, Team F.I.S.T. These four men will actually square off against one another in the DGUSA CHIKARA atomico, but they’ll jump into it again in the quest for those three points needed for a shot at the Campeonatos de Parejas in Reading. Two weeks remaining until the big show, get your tickets now.

Finally, in regards to the Dragon Gate USA show, Lince Dorado has been announced as the fourth entrant into The Fray, the big preshow gauntlet. This’ll be a big chance for Lince to make a splash in front of the Philadelphia crowd and impress the DGUSA higher ups. Those with tickets in the first three rows will be the first to see who will stake their claim as the future of Dragon Gate USA coming up in six days!

In late news prior to this weekend’s Aniversario events, CHIKARA have announced via their email newsletter that the CHIKARA Young Lions Cup Champion Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen will not be on the shows due to an ankle injury. Olsen is expected to be out for 4 weeks. This leaves Jigsaw, Lince Dorado and Helios without a partner for their 8-man tag team match on Sunday against Hallowicked, Frightmare, Cheech & Cloudy, although the updated card in the newsletter suggests that Olsen will be replaced as opposed to the match getting trimmed to a trios match.

dgatomico2

In this week’s DGUSA update, the rudos have gained their first member as F.I.S.T.’s Gran Akuma will be participating on the July 25th card. Akuma has been a regular on the CHIKARA roster since his debut in late 2002 and he has achieved much success as both a singles wrestler and as a member of a unit, having won both the Torneo Cibernetico (in 2005) and Los Campeonatos de Parejas (alongside Icarus in 2006-2007), and he’s also wrestled (and taken to the limit) many of CHIKARA’s top names, including Claudio Castagnoli, Eddie Kingston and Mike Quackenbush.

The next “home” CHIKARA show has been confirmed for July 31st, taking place after this weekend’s Aniversario weekend, the DGUSA card in Philadelphia and the trip to Big Japan Pro-Wrestling. It will be taking place in Reading, PA and is entitled “Never Kneel at the Altar of Conformity”. It’s subtitled as a “Fan Appreciation Night”, although what that specifically means hasn’t been confirmed yet.

triosmatch9

A few days ago “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush announced in a blog on the CHIKARA website that he would be out of action for a period of time due to surgery on his back. In his final wish before leaving, Quack elevated his frequent sidekick from the student to the teacher and asked “The Wrestling Riddle” known as Jigsaw to act as a “mentor” figure to The Future Is Now: Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen, Lince Dorado and Helios. The third Young Lions Cup Champion has clearly accepted this challenge, as the upcoming Easton show on May 23rd will see Jig join forces with TFIN’s Dorado and Helios in a trios match. Unfortunately, their opponents will not be pushovers, as they will be up against F.I.S.T. of Gran Akuma, Icarus and Chuck Taylor, the 2009 King of Trios winners. The three will be in quite the vile zone one night prior to the big hair vs. mask match against The Colony in Philly, which could work in the favour of the tecnico trio. Will F.I.S.T.’s focus on the ants cause an upset in this match, or will CHIKARA’s most dangerous trio continue to destroy all comers en route to The Arena?
