The other day, we made a promise that we’d get everyone caught up on the recent non-Cibernetico related evolutions on October’s cards in Easton and Philadelphia. Have we ever let you down? Don’t mention the failed launch of that new redesign (we’re still coming out with that, by the way, just you wait!), and let’s just go with the popular answer of “never, you love us!” Onward with the matches:

“An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World” ~ October 17, 2009 in Easton, PA

While we have what’s likely our main event in the form of the Campeonatos de Parejas defense of The Colony vs. The Roughnecks, the rest of this card has unfolded in quite unique fashion. The most notable additions have seen the Super Smash Bros. competing in singles action, both with quite hefty challenges ahead of them. Young Lions Cup champion Player Dos is going to be defending his title against Incoherence’s crazed mini-demon Frightmare, who has been on quite the tear in singles competition this year. He’ll be looking to prove that his first round bounce in the YLC tournament back in August was a fluke; he already avenged his loss to Brendan Michael Thomas, and taking the cup away from the winner of said tournament would only solidify how much of a fluke that was. Meanwhile, Player Uno has been attempting to prove that he’s not playing games anymore, and has targeted the cream of the crop in CHIKARA, Claudio Castagnoli, to prove that he’s serious. This is arguably Uno’s biggest singles bout to date in CHIKARA, and while he’s had some big singles wins over top Wrestle Factory talent in the past, nothing’s been quite as big as the co-head trainer.

Also on this show, we’re going to see a singles match that’s nearly two years in the making. Jigsaw was set to take on Gran Akuma in Easton in October, a continuation of their rivalry that’s brewed to a head in 2009. However, Akuma’s injury that kept him off of the September shows was re-aggravated while on the comeback trail. When word hit the CHIKARA locker room, a certain rudo that Jigsaw has a lot of past with stepped up to the plate – STIGMA. These two have a long history with one another, dating back to their days as the much beloved ShaneSaw team. They had their problems with one another in late 2007, and since that time, Jigsaw left and returned while the former Shane Storm turned his back on the fans and joined Vin Gerard’s UnStable. These two have a lot of unsettled beef with one another, and it’s long overdue that they step in the ring to do battle one on one.

The hunt for three points never quite ends, and while it’s been some time since UltraMantis Black and Crossbones have made an attempt to add on to the one point that they gained in Japan back in June against Shadow WX and Yuichi Taniguchi, the original Order of the Neo-Solar Temple are back on the ball and looking to shoot to the top. Their opponents on October 17th, the newest Colony duo of Green Ant and Carpenter Ant. Will the new hormigas be able to get the ball rolling towards a title shot against their fellow Colony members, or are Mantis and Bones going to establish dominance while Delirious is off in Japan?

“Cibernetico Incredible” ~ October 18, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA

Many expected this to be one of the big title matches coming up towards the end of the year, and while this may have a set of champions involved if Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood can snatch the belts from The Colony the night prior, this match between two rudo duos will not be for the Campeonatos de Parejas. No matter what the results of the defense is in Easton, The Osirian Portal are looking to get the ball rolling towards getting the gold back after dropping the belts in Nashua last month, and there’d be no better way to start that off than to get their first point against the Roughnecks.

Two more duos are also looking to grab up some valuable points this weekend, and they’re both quite new to the CHIKARA scene. The Badd Boys have have been flirting with the company for a while – unexpectedly showing up on one of the Big Japan dojo events hosted while CHIKARA was overseas in June – and finally made their debut in West Springfield last month when they put away Fire Ant and Green Ant. This time, the challenge is a bit different; the red hot Dasher Hatfield has been knocking wins out of the park since his debut. His search for a partner ended when a young man by the name of Sugar Dunkerton put his name out there to help Dasher on his quest for three points. It’ll be interesting to see what Dunkerton brings to the table in Philly, as this will be his CHIKARA debut.

One small change to a previously announced match – Atsuko Emoto has been pulled from the ladies’ tag in Philly and replaced with Bullfight Sora, a Big Japan women’s wrestler who has incredible similarities to Emoto. Not much to say, really.

Oh, hey! Did you notice things look a little different around here? Hope you like it, because trust us, it was a lot of work. Enough about us, let’s talk CHIKARA…

The sixth annual Torneo Cibernetico is beginning to unfold, and the “incredibles” theme has already made things quite interesting. Only two members have been announced for each squad, but the teams see two of CHIKARA’s top tecnico squads up against one another – Campeon de Parejas Soldier Ant captains a team with “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush, while Fire Ant is the head of a team that sees him alongside Jigsaw. With six more teams set to be split amongst the two squads, it’s going to be quite interesting to see how things unfold.

Meanwhile, the night prior in Easton will see the return of Brad and Chad Baddthe Badd Boys – who made a powerful debut in West Springfield a few weeks back in manhandling Green Ant and Fire Ant. At “An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World”, they see a slightly bigger challenge as The Future is Now representatives Helios and Lince Dorado step up to the Badd Challenge. Points are in play here; who’s gonna walk out one step closer to a shot at The Colony? Find out on October 17th!

Our good buddy Richard Parker is running another bus trip – two, in fact! Check here for info on the trip from New York City to Philly for October’s “Cibernetico Incredible”, and how to land a sweet discount if you choose to take the trip to both the Cibernetico and November’s Dragon Gate USA event. A fun time for all CHIKARA fans; if you’re in the NYC metro area, definitely check out this steal of an offer.

In a blog that may have some foreshadowing towards the upcoming Cibernetico, Player Uno speaks out and sends a message to his teammate, reminding him that Uno is the one that made him who he is.

The 180th episode of CHIKARA’s Podcast-a-Go-Go sees clips from this year’s Rey de Voladores tournament that took place over King of Trios weekend in March. Check out both first round matches!

In CHIKARA, tradition is normally that the big grudge matches are held off for the end of the season. However, this year has been full of surprises, and the latest one is something the fans have been begging to see for quite a while as a month earlier than some may have expected – Jigsaw and Gran Akuma are set to do battle in singles action in Easton. The two men have had sort of a competitive rivalry that’s gotten a bit personal in recent months, dating back to April’s “The Bobliographon” event, where Akuma pinned Jig with a Rubik’s Cube in a big atomico main event. It happened again a month later in Easton at the end of a trios match between F.I.S.T. and Jigsaw/Lince Dorado/Helios, this time with the Yoshi Tonic.

From there, things took a turn for the personal. The two saw each other across the ring a few months later at Dragon Gate USA’s “Open the Historic Gate” show; Jig ended up getting the win this time over Akuma’s teammate Icarus. However, after the match, Akuma took his frustrations out on a downed Mike Quackenbush, who was receiving a beating from Dragon Gate’s YAMATO after Quack laid out a challenge to the DG locker room. Six days later, Icarus and Akuma squared off with Quack and Jigsaw at “Never Kneel at the Altar of Conformity” in Reading; F.I.S.T. reigned supreme that night in one of the best and most heated matches on the show. Most recently, at this past weekend’s “Open the Untouchable Gate” DGUSA event, Jigsaw and Akuma saw themselves once again across the ring from one another in tag action, with Quackenbush on Jig’s side and YAMATO on Akuma’s. While the tecnicos got the win after YAMATO accidentally speared Akuma, leaving him open for Quackenbush, it was Jigsaw who was laid out earlier in the match as the evil duo took out his knee.

Needless to say, this singles confrontation coming up at “An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World” has a lot on the line. What was once a competitive rivalry between two men has become a battle of personal pride between two warriors. A victory in singles competition for either man holds a lot of value in this war between the two, and if Akuma has his way, he might just aim for more than a victory; he may very well try to put Jigsaw on the sidelines for good.

Speaking of wars, Crossbones has spoken out on his feelings on the apparent war that is coming for Ultramantis Black. He posted a blog today on the CHIKARAPro.com site, which you can read here.

Last night’s Dragon Gate USA show in Chicago saw many great matches, including an outstanding contest between Davey Richards and Shingo Takagi, plus Bryan Danielson vs. Naruki Doi and the Young Bucks against current Twin Gate champions Genki Horiguchi & Ryo Saito. However, being CHIKARAFans.com, it’s important that we focus on the CHIKARA involvement, which saw Mike Quackenbush & Jigsaw looking to avenge the events of Philadelphia against YAMATO & Gran Akuma. They did end up winning after YAMATO accidentally speared Akuma and Quack pinned the F.I.S.T. member with the QD2. However, the rudos had the last laugh after the match. With Jigsaw incapacitated due to damage inflicted on his knee during the match, YAMATO grabbed Quack and clamped the sleeper hold onto him, forcing him to pass out. However, help came in the form of “The Nightmare Warrior” Hallowicked, who rushed to the ring to save his trainer. Once again the tecnicos have achieved the pinfall victory but the rudos have escaped with the last laugh.

Speaking of Hallowicked, he participated in the second FRAY! match, alongside Young Lions Cup participant Prince Mustafa Ali and former YLC champion Arik Cannon. Entering first, Wicked lasted all the way until the end before falling to Johnny Gargano.

As CHIKARA says hello to New Hampshire, they’ll also be saying goodbye to a friend as the Bryan Danielson indy farewell tour will make a stop in Nashua on September 13. He will be teaming with one of his 2009 King of Trios buddies – “Double C” Claudio Castagnoli – in tag team competition. Their opponents are arguably one of the best duos on the indies today, Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw. “The American Dragon” had quite a heated confrontation with Quack at King of Trios when Danielson focused on Quack’s injured back, leading to Quack applying the Cattle Mutilation in an act of vengeance, so it’ll be interesting to see how long those two can stick to the straight mat wrestling. This match could also bring about some memories of the 2005 CHIKARA vs. Kings of Wrestling tags, where Claudio often clashed with Quack, Jigsaw and various other tecnicos. As all indy wrestling fans wish Bryan Danielson well on his way to the WWE, Quack and Jig won’t be willing to show mercy and allow Danielson to halt their quest to become the Campeones.

Speaking of the Campeonatos de Parejas, F.I.S.T. have a special update posted on the Podcast feed ahead of their title match on September 12 against the Osirian Portal.

The second of three DVD covers for Young Lions Cup has been released.

Less of a news day today, moreso a day for random post-show tidbits, website updates, pictures and other nonsense like that. Things went a bit lax on the update front last week, so I’ll mention the matches that were added to next month’s weekend in New England.

ArielSara

CHIKARA’s women’s division has been dominated by two women since mid-2006: Daizee Haze (see below) and Sara Del Rey. Several women have attempted to knock the two off their perches, ranging from Candice LaRae to Sassy Stephie to Rayna Von Tash. None have been successful. The latest in that line of ladies will make her debut over CHIKARA’s weekend in New England, as SHIMMER star Ariel will be looking to send a message to Sara Del Rey in their singles match. Ariel has wrestled – and beaten – some of the best SHIMMER has to offer, including MsChif, Nikki Roxx and Cheerleader Melissa (aka TNA’s Alissa Flash), so she’s going to be anything but a pushover. She also has history with Del Rey, as “The American Angel” viciously assaulted Ariel on SHIMMER Volume 19 following a battle royal before defeating her later in the evening. It’s the Dariel vs. the Royal Butterfly in Nashua!

TagOTecnicos

The night before in West Springfield, the new town is in for quite the treat as Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw will be in tag team action against Incoherence, Hallowicked and Frightmare. On night 3 of the Young Lions Cup Frightmare and his tag team partner Turbo came up short against Quack and Jorge Rivera, but this will be the third high profile occasion where he has come up against his maestro so he will surely be growing in confidence every time they wrestle. This match is also quite interesting as it pits Quack against the old and new generation of his students, as Hallowicked was one of the first graduates of the Wrestle Factory and Frightmare is one of the more recent. It also revives the Jigsaw vs. Hallowicked rivalry from 2005 in a big way. Since that time Hallowicked has renounced his rudo ways, fighting for the forces of good, but old habits die hard and you’d have to imagine that, give the chance, both Jig and Wicked would love to prove themselves to be the better man once again. Expect fast-paced flying and submissions aplenty. Blinking isn’t recommended for this one.

CHIKARA released the full and official results for night 3 of Young Lions Cup soon after the conclusion of the event, and they also announced the attendance on Twitter: 393.

- Player Dos becomes the 12th Young Lions Cup champion.

Dasher Hatfield now has a profile picture among other things on the CHIKARA tecnico roster page. No Vökoder on the rudo side of things, nor has anything more been noted about the mystery man who distracted Mantis and Delirious on Sunday, but the former is extremely new and the latter doesn’t have a name yet and hasn’t wrestled, so don’t expect them for a while. Plus, Carpenter Ant ahead of them in the line. The Sea Donsters are still listed as a unit but it can only be a matter of time before that gets sorted out.

Much like the Great Khali, Daizee Haze would like some competition in CHIKARA. Two words: Cody Deaner. Him or former IWA Mid-South Women’s Champion, the neon-haired wonder that is Chuck Taylor.

Marshall’s got some YLC pics here and here.

Green Ant and Soldier Ant were rocking weird new masks after the show this past Sunday. Here’s a picture of Green Ant looking kinda like Osaka Pro’s Miracleman!

The final two weekends in the 2009 CHIKARA calendar have been announced. Both will be Easton/Philadelphia weekends (on Saturday and Sunday), as has become the norm in the last year or so, and the first of the Philly shows will play host to the annual Torneo Cibernetico.

Dragon Gate USA “opened the Historic Gate” last night, holding their first show before a packed house at the Arena. The main event saw the holder of both the Brave and Dream Gate, Naruki Doi, overcome the man he defeated to win the Dream Gate, Shingo Takagi, with his signature Muscular Bomb, underlined the fact that he is the man to beat in all of Dragon Gate nowadays. Also on the card was a battle between YAMATO and BxB Hulk (with Daizee Haze acting as one of Hulk’s dancers!), a show-stealing match between the Young Bucks and CIMA/Susumu Yokosuka, and a killer singles battle between Masato Yoshino and Dragon Kid!

However, the biggest news from a CHIKARA perspective has to be the post-match events of the CHIKARA showcase match. The match itself was a grand showcase of what has brought CHIKARA to the dance, if you will, with high-flying, fast paced action all over the place, ending in Jigsaw pinning Icarus with his signature Jig ‘n’ Tonic to earn the tecnicos a big win. Once the match had finished and 7 of the 8 wrestlers had gone to the back, “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush grabbed the microphone and introduced a tribute video for the legendary Jorge “Skayde” Rivera. He also added that perhaps a Dragon Gate vs. CHIKARA match should take place in the future, which brought out KAMIKAZE member YAMATO. Despite a recent change of heart back home in Japan, the ever-devious YAMATO lured Quack into a false sense of security by implying he respected Quack before fouling Quackenbush and adding (via translation) that he had no respect for Quack, CHIKARA or Skayde. Jigsaw attempted to save Quack but also got attacked, drawing F.I.S.T. member Gran Akuma from the backstage area. Jigsaw appealed to him, saying that YAMATO had disrespected all of the CHIKARA wrestlers, but instead of helping him Akuma chose to side with YAMATO, putting a beating on Quack and Jigsaw. Cheech and Cloudy attempted to make the save but were quickly sent to the floor, and the YAMATO/Akuma alliance was finally sent packing by the trio of Fire Ant, Soldier Ant and Lince Dorado. With Jigsaw earning the win in this match that means that he will now be on the second DGUSA card in Chicago (along with Quack), so it’ll be interesting to see if those two challenge YAMATO and Akuma to a tag match.

Other CHIKARA participation saw the aforementioned Lince Dorado overcome Cheech, Cloudy and several others en route to an impressive victory in the FRAY match after using his signature Shooting Star Press.

It was also announced that on November 28, 2009 DGUSA will return to the Arena with a one-night tournament to decide the holder of the Open the Freedom Gate, the top singles title in DGUSA.

CHIKARA Fans readers, the petition has worked – Stinky the Homeless Guy, Inter Species Wrestling’s resident hobo, has been added to the Young Lions Cup tournament as the 24th and final entrant! A recent string of bad luck has befallen the homeless hero, as his best friend Flip D. Berger was brainwashed and turned against him by Moohammad, to the point where Flip defeated Stinky last weekend for his ISW Other Title (Flip then handed the belt over to Moohammad). However, despite his poor luck, he’s been fortunate enough to be brought along on somewhat of a US tour, beginning the weekend prior to Young Lions Cup weekend with ISW’s US debut, “The Worst That Could Happen” in East Hartford, CT. Will Stinky be able to turn the tides around and bring the Cup home?

If he does, he’ll have some stiff competition as we all know. Thankfully for him and the other 23 competitiors, they now have somewhat of an idea as to what to look forward to, as CHIKARA announced who will be competing on nights one and two today! The field has been split as follows:

Night One: Create-a-Wrestler, Prince Mustafa Ali, Lince Dorado, Jason Hades, Hydra, Colin Delaney, Brandon Michael Thomas, Tim Donst, El Leonino, Frightmare, Stinky the Homeless Guy, Grizzly Redwood

Night Two: Yellow Dog, Soldier Ant, Cloudy, Darin Corbin, Ryan Cruz, Player Uno, Player Dos, Trik Davis, Carpenter Ant, Shane Hollister, Chimaera, Bret Race

Mike Quackenbush is making his return to wrestling next weekend at the big Dragon Gate USA debut in Philadelphia, but he makes his return to CHIKARA the weekend after as he teams with Jigsaw to take on Icarus and Gran Akuma, Team F.I.S.T. These four men will actually square off against one another in the DGUSA CHIKARA atomico, but they’ll jump into it again in the quest for those three points needed for a shot at the Campeonatos de Parejas in Reading. Two weeks remaining until the big show, get your tickets now.

Finally, in regards to the Dragon Gate USA show, Lince Dorado has been announced as the fourth entrant into The Fray, the big preshow gauntlet. This’ll be a big chance for Lince to make a splash in front of the Philadelphia crowd and impress the DGUSA higher ups. Those with tickets in the first three rows will be the first to see who will stake their claim as the future of Dragon Gate USA coming up in six days!

In a surprise to no one, CHIKARA announced that, on August 16th in Philadelphia, a lucha libre explosion will take place as eternal rivals Mascarita Dorada and Pierrothito will face off one-on-one. Those of you that were looking forward to their tag bout on night two should really anticipate this showdown on the third night of Young Lions Cup, as these two have had some of the best minis singles matches in the land.

Also announced over the weekend were a myriad of matches featuring CHIKARA talent for Inter Species Wrestling’s upcoming debut in the United States, “The Worst That Could Happen…in Connecticut”. With the inclusion of the CHIKARA talent, the card is somewhat reminiscent of their first event back in August of 2005 “One Hit Wonder”, where Quack and the gang headed to the great white north to take on the ISW talent. There are two incredibly noteworthy occurrences of CHIKARA talent on the show. The first one, on paper, stands to be one of the best matches in ISW history as CHIKARA’s Jigsaw takes on El Generico and Zombified in a three way. The second sees the return of Jolly Roger, CHIKARA’s original Party Pirate, as he steps out of retirement for the first time since 2005 (at “One Hit Wonder”, coincidentally), to take on Hydra in one hell of a battle between a pirate and a sea monster. Also announced is The Badd Boys, Chad and Brad Badd, taking on the unlikely duo of Vin Gerard and Buck Hawke and a showdown between CHIKARA semi-regular Pinkie Sanchez and ISW’s undead beast Izzie Deadyet (who appeared in CHIKARA way back in 2006 in a special Monster Mash preshow before the “Cibernetico Forever” event).

A quick update this weekend before we hopefully get the chance to punch the clock for the weekend, as the month of July sees a few new additions into the mix. While Ophidian has been removed from the Dragon Gate USA atomico match due to his broken arm (see yesterday’s update for details), the atomico squad has added Jigsaw to the ranks to team alongside Fire Ant and Soldier Ant. Unlike the rest of the men in the match so far, this will not be Jigsaw’s first time appearing on pay-per-view television, as he appeared as a member of the Vulture Squad in past Ring of Honor PPV’s. However, this is possibly Jig’s biggest stage yet in his career, as an impressive performance here could perhaps pay off in the form of a proper Dragon Gate Japanese tour for any of these men.

Also in the month of August is a match added to the “Never Kneel at the Altar of Conformity” card in Reading, as perpetual rivals Lince Dorado and Amasis square off in their first ever CHIKARA singles bout. The two men have had a competitive feud with one another dating back to Amasis’ early days in CHIKARA, when him and Ophidian took two points away from Lince and El Pantera in one of the Portal’s first tag matches way back in November of 2007. How will the devious Funky Pharaoh fare without his partner at his side? We’ll find out in just five weeks when CHIKARA hits Reading for the last time in 2009!
