The opening round matches are complete for this year’s Young Lions Cup as just moments ago the final matches were confirmed. First, it’s a clash between a CHIKARA debutant and one of CHIKARA’s youngest lions as the pink ‘n’ black attack of Brendan Michael Thomas confronts Incoherence member Frightmare. In the other contest to round off the opening night action, Roughneck member Grizzly Redwood looks to capitalise on his momentum after tag success in Reading, but his opponent El Leonino will not be intending to give him an easy ride in his CHIKARA debut.

DogRace

HolliTrik

Moving onto night 2, the debuting and mysterious Bret Race will be taking on the Midwest’s own Yellow Dog. And finally, expect nothing more than tremendous fast-paced action as Trik Davis goes up against a man he knows very well, Shane Hollister. These men have wrestled numerous times in the past and have been compared to fellow speed style wrestlers Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin. Whether they can live up to that particularly high billing is yet to be seen, but only one will advance to the second round of YLC.

Footage of the Dragon Gate USA debut show, Open the Historic Gate, has been released, showing the events following the CHIKARA tag where YAMATO and Gran Akuma beat down Jigsaw and Mike Quackenbush. That can be viewed by clicking here. As a result of that, just added to the September 6th Chicago show is a grudge tag team match between Quackenbush & Jigsaw and YAMATO & Akuma.

SurfnLucha

As the first round announcements for this year’s Young Lions Cup draw to a close, many fans are theorising as to what the remaining matches will be. Well, if any of you predicted that KC “Cloudy” Day would be action against Chimaera, give yourself a gold star, because that’s exactly what’s going down! Like many other wrestlers on the CHIKARA roster, Cloudy did indeed participate on the Dragon Gate USA debut show, attempting to save Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw from the attacks of YAMATO and Gran Akuma, and he’s expected to go far in this tournament. However, anyone who’s done a YouTube search or two can see that Chimaera is quite the athletic high-flier so this could be quite the little battle.

FourCornersOrder

Also added to the YLC weekend is participation from the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple. For the first time in many years the Order has no representative in this year’s tournament, but they could walk out of the weekend with valuable points towards Campeonatos de Parejas contendership, as UltraMantis Black and Delirious will be taking part in the night 3 tag team 4-way elimination match. Mantis has never wrestled for the titles despite wrestling for CHIKARA since day 1, but it seems that he now has his best opportunity with Delirious doing his bidding, and May victories over both Arik Cannon and Player Uno (in a trios match) suggest that the former Incoherence member is extremely dangerous and an extremely effective weapon. As long as Mantis holds the Eye of Tyr, you have to imagine that the Order will be hard to stop.

Check out this AWESOME “Previously at CHIKARA” for July, showing a whole lot of recent feuds and angles and all that good stuff.

Wrapping up the news from yesterday and today!

Stinky vs. Colin Delaney!

Many accusations have been made regarding the personal hygiene of Vin Gerard and the UnStable, including numerous implications that they may in fact be homeless and perhaps even live in the many dumpsters across the state of Pennsylvania. We here at CHIKARA Fans couldn’t possibly comment on the matter but someone in the CHIKARA offices is clearly having a good laugh at the UnStable’s expense because round 1 of the Young Lions Cup pits Colin Delaney up against Inter-Species Wrestling’s hungry hungry hobo Stinky the Homeless Guy. Stinky may sound and look like a bit of a novelty character, a man to be taken lightly, but any ISW fan who has seen some of his battles against the likes of Flip (formerly of the “D. Burger” clan) can confirm that he’s anything but a pushover and Colin’s gonna have to be on form to roll over him.

Arik Cannon vs. Lince Dorado!

In non-tournament action over Young Lions Cup weekend, former Young Lions Cup Champion “The Anarchist” Arik Cannon will be in the house as he takes on the winner of the first DGUSA FRAY match, “The Golden Lynx of Lucha Libre” Lince Dorado. Lince will be taking a similar risk to Soldier Ant over YLC weekend by taking a non-tournament match which could hurt him if he wins his singles match and the 6-way on night 1. However, history is on his side if you look at the 2007 Young Lions Cup where Chuck Taylor defeated Cabana Man Dan and won the 6-way on night 1, beat Arik Cannon in a non-tournament match on night 2, and then defeated Ricochet on night 3 to win the Young Lions Cup. This also comes one night before Cannon takes part in the Golden Dream trios match where three of his opponents – Jigsaw, Helios and Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen – are team-mates of Dorado, so he could see this as an opportunity to find out exactly what he’s in for.

Create-A-Wrestler vs. Jason Hades!

In today’s YLC update, the newly-gimmicked Create-A-Wrestler will be in opening round action on night 1 but he won’t have it easy as he faces IWA-MS star and former Light-Heavyweight Champion Jason Hades. Hades will be out to make an impact in his CHIKARA debut but must make sure he doesn’t overlook CAW, who has looked fairly impressive in recent singles competition (including a strong outing against UltraMantis Black). CAW will also have to be considered a bit of a wildcard because Hades will have no idea what to expect from CAW’s new character, but Hades has wrestled some of the best the independents have to offer so you’d have to think that if he can connect with the Killswitch, regardless of CAW’s gimmick, it’ll be over.

In other news, two of the main matches for the second Dragon Gate USA card on September 6th have been confirmed, as Bryan Danielson will take on the Dream and Brave Gate Champion Naruki Doi while Shingo Takagi goes up against Davey Richards. CHIKARA’s Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw have been confirmed as participating on the card, as has the man who disrespected all of CHIKARA on Saturday, KAMIKAZE member YAMATO, so there has to be a strong possibility of a CHIKARA vs. Dragon Gate match involving those men.

Following all of the partner vs. partner announcements this week for the opening round of the Young Lions Cup, it feels a bit odd to be talking about a match between men who aren’t members of the same tag team. However, we finally have one, as The Future Is Now member Lince Dorado tackles Elite Pro’s Prince Mustafa Ali. Both men are known for their high-flying abilities so this shouldn’t be expected to remain on the ground for long. You would also have to imagine that if Lince improves this weekend for Dragon Gate USA in their Fray match that he would come into this match with much confidence, while Ali will be out to embarass Lince on his home turf and perhaps earn a regular spot on the CHIKARA roster!

Since it was announced a few weeks ago that the Reading show would feature a match involving wrestlers from CHIKARA’s past, many people have been theorising as to who could be involved, especially considering the timing of the announcement came very close to the announcement that Jolly Roger will be returning on the upcoming ISW show in Connecticut. Well, CHIKARA have finally confirmed who will be taking part, and it’s two men from the early days of CHIKARA who participated in the alumni battle royal back in December. Taking part in this match are Dragonfly, a graduate of the very first Wrestle Factory class, and Rorschach, one of the two graduates from the third class. Rorschach disappeared from regular CHIKARA competition in late 2006 so he would under normal circumstances be at a severe disadvantage, but Dragonfly left CHIKARA before the first anniversary show so who knows how he will look following such a long absense.

It appears that the Soldier Ant vs. Carpenter Ant all-Colony clash has set a theme for this year’s Young Lions Cup, as the next two matches added to this year’s tournament pit even more tag team partners against one another. First up is a clash between North Star Express members Darin Corbin and Ryan Cruz. Both wrestlers are extremely untested in singles competition in CHIKARA, but Corbin in particular has achieved slight success elsewhere, most notably defeating Arik Cannon in 2006 for the IWA Mid-South Heavyweight title. The other tournament match has a bit more backstory to it, as Hydra and Tim Donst will battle to decide who is the dominant Sea Donster. These two showed a bit of dissention in May following a tag team loss to 2.0 and Donst in particular appeared to be very frustrated, so it should be interesting to see whether these two hold anything back when put against each other.

Elsewhere on the YLC cards, the UnStable and F.I.S.T. will join forces on night 3 of the tournament in the Golden Dream 3-way trios match as Vin Gerard has recruited Chuck Taylor to team with him and STIGMA. With The Future Is Now & Jigsaw also completing a trio, now all that remains is for Fire Ant to pick his final man out of a selection of Arik Cannon, Max Boyer and Larry Sweeney.

And speaking of Fire Ant, he will be in action on night 1 of the tournament as he teams with Soldier Ant to tackle 2.0 – Jagged and Shane Matthews. This is a rematch from the “Duel & Duality” show last December where the Canadians failed to overcome the record-setting Campeonatos contenders despite using every trick in the book, including a handful of powder! However, this time around 2.0 come in with some slight momentum following a win in May over the Sea Donsters and a trip to Big Japan Pro-Wrestling. Also of note is that Soldier Ant could be making a big mistake by taking a non-tournament match one night before his match with Carpenter Ant, so Jagged and Matthews could look to take advantage of a potential lack of focus and steal the win.

CHIKARA wrestlers will be participating on the second Dragon Gate USA card in Chicago on 9/6. Mike Quackenbush has been added to the card, as will be the wrestler who scores the pin in the upcoming Atomico on the debut show in Philly (assuming that it isn’t Quack who scores it). Other CHIKARA wrestlers should be announced in the coming weeks.

At the end of May at the “Aniversario Yang” show a new member of The Colony debuted. His name? Carpenter Ant, and it was his intrusion in the main event of that show, thwarting the interference of Gran Akuma, that lead to his stablemates Fire and Soldier Ant taking the hairs of both Icarus and Chuck Taylor. Well, with that in mind, Carpenter will not have been expecting his first match in CHIKARA to be against one of the men he assisted, as in the first round of this year’s Young Lions Cup it will be Carpenter Ant vs. Soldier Ant! Under any normal circumstances you would have to consider Carpenter to be a great unknown but it is likely that Soldier is aware of what Carpenter can bring to the table, so the odds are well and truly stacked against the newcomer. He’ll be out to pull off a huge upset while Soldier will be aiming to replicate the success of his long-time tag team partner Fire Ant, even if it comes at the expense of the “new generation” of ants!

Also taking place over YLC weekend will be a 4-corners elimination tag team contest. The participants are yet to be announced but you would have to imagine there’s a strong possibility that several of the eliminated wrestlers from the YLC tournament, both CHIKARA regulars and newcomers, will want a spot in this match. As a few teams have shown in the past, most notably The Colony last November, this type of match can be ideal for any team looking to challenge for Los Campeonatos de Parejas.

The new CHIKARA yearbook is available to preorder here. You can get a standard version or a version signed by the CHIKARA roster.

Welcome, CHIKARA fans, to the live results of the first night of CHIKARA’s biggest tournament of the year, King of Trios 2009. Sixteen teams from all over the wrestling world have come together to determine who is the top trio in all of pro wrestling, and the first round begins tonight! Who will go on to Saturday? Find out live starting at 7:00 PM EST as we post live from The Arena in South Philadelphia.

Preshow Notes: Attendance around 550. Entranceway is swank, I’ll attempt to get a picture at intermission. The merch tables are stacked to the high heavens with things from every single person. You want a JOB Squad shirt? Shoulda been here. The front row fans get the distinct honor of having padded chairs, a true sign of luxury. Brain Damage’s flight is currently delayed. Iceberg will not be here; his replacement will be selected at the appropriate time.

1. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: Arik Cannon, Ryan Cruz & Darin Corbin [The F1RST Family] vs. Austin Aries, Ryan Drago & Tony Kozina [Team EPIC WAR]: Aries gets a huge pop, and is playing babyface a bit too much early on. So glad to see F1RST back in CHIKARA! Drago tags himself in before the match starts, some slight dissent early for EPIC WAR. Aries does the Tatanka babyface comeback on Cannon early to a roaring response from all 30 people that actually get the joke. A lot of tension between Drago and Aries, with Drago tagging himself in at more inopportune times. Small aside – Drago has certain body features that match American Balloon, and not in a good way. NSE get it going with a dive from Corbin and an accompanied one from Cruz that was cut off by Aries. The F1RST Family advance in 11:42 following a Cruz Control on Drago. Awesome match, crowd is PUMPED. Great opener.

2. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: El Generico, Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson [Team PWG] vs. Amasis, Ophidian & Escorpion Egipcio [The Osirian Portal]: Team PWG’s music is a best of both worlds compromise as “Olé” rolls right into “Mmmbop”. Awesome. Generico and Amasis lead off, the Funky Pharoh dancing his way out of the chain holds until Generico comes back with some moves of his own. Egipcio and…one of the Young Bucks (I’ll get torn a new one for that) hit some lucha stuff, making way for Ophidian and the other Young Buck (I feel so bad right now!) to trade off lucha of their own after a tag. Really cool stuff, crowd eats it up as they reaaaally lay into each other with some chops. Running through the various combinations of both squads now as the Bucks start to hit some sweet double teams on Amasis. PWG works Amasis over huge early, stringing together some cool stuff on him. Egipcio gets in and hits some killer power stuff, including turning Generico inside out with a clothesline. Portal gets their upper hand working over one of the Bucks until Generico gets the big tag. Quite the little battle between him and Escorpion. Match is starting to go bonkers, dives by the Bucks as the crowd rallies behind Generico. Twin 450’s by the Portal on the Bucks for 2!!! The Portal advance in 16 and change after Ophidian wraps up Generico for the pin. Alan4L’s heart is bleeding. “PLEASE COME BACK!” for the Young Bucks.

3. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: Claudio Castagnoli, Dave Taylor & Bryan Danielson [Team Uppercut] vs. Brodie Lee, Eddie Kingston & Grizzly Redwood [The Roughnecks]: No “Final Countdown”, but you have never seen a crowd get more hyped up for a potential showdown than Kingston and Danielson starting off…only for King to tag in Grizz. A small poseoff of physiques between Danielson and Grizz, with King showing off his chiseled body from the corner. Dragon toys around with his former student early, mocking his stature by overselling every big man spot from Grizz in comedic fashion. Kingston comes in against Danielson to a “YOU’RE GONNA GET YOUR FLIPPIN’ HEAD KICKED IN” chant. Kingston gets bounced around in a circle of uppercuts from all three tecnicos. Not the match you would’ve expected to be lighthearted comedy early, but it’s soooo working. Things get a little more serious as Brodie powers Danielson, but Dave Taylor gets in and steps it up with some good chain wrestling, looking like he’s having the time of his life out there. Grizz managed to take advantage of the concept of lucha tags by somehow getting Uppercut members to armdrag each other in confusion, but they reconcile. Dave Taylor on the top rope?!?! His teammates convince him to come down and just lay Roughnecks out with more uppercuts. The Roughnecks corner Danielson once again and start to work him over. Both teams brawl for a while…BIG SPIN ON GRIZZLY. Crowd is on their feet at 50…and it’s going. This crowd can’t count. It was 79-ish, not 100. Team Uppercut advances in 20:38 after Claudio’s Biggest Spin on Grizzly. INCREDIBLY fun.

4. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: Marshe Rockett, Trauma & Willie Richardson [Da Soul Touchaz] vs. Pinkie Sanchez, Greg Excellent & Beef Wellington [Team CZW]: Team CZW has Rickroll’d the crowd with their entrance music. Pinkie and Marshe kick this one off, but then Beef and Willie are tagged in…oh my god, Beef just got on the mic and dropped the first verse of “Ice Ice Baby”. Kind of incredible. Trauma and Greg now…and we are now dancing to “Apache”! Soul Touchaz are down to business now with a Big Willie flying elbow drop and some double teaming with him and M-80. Some triple team stuff from the CZW squad in return with plenty of Pinkie’s patented rear end action. Marshe with a HUUUUGE dive and…OH GOD, BIG WILLIE WITH A BIGGER DIVE OVER THE TOP ON EVERYONE. Beef hits the Ass Punch on Trauma and tries to get him up for E. Coli…but Trauma has none of it and lays him out with a DVD. Pinkie takes out Trauma and we’re hitting finishers galore! Da Soul Touchaz move onto night two in 14:56 when Willie drops Da Bomb on Beef. This was really, really fun stuff all around, maybe the most all around fun match so far.

Intermission.

5. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: Gran Akuma, Icarus & Chuck Taylor [Team F.I.S.T.] vs. Necro Butcher, Toby Klein & Brain Damage [Death Match Kings]: F.I.S.T. has perfectly matching purple tights, and Brain Damage is here! After a few seconds of control the Kings take it out into an all out brawl, with Necro KILLING Icarus and Akuma. Icarus went for a tornado DDT on Necro but ol’ Necro put him on his feet and punched dude in the face. AKUMA HAS CHAIRS AND HAS CHALLENGED NECRO TO A PUNCHOUT. Akuma kick in the head is countered by multiple Necro punches and a suplex while Akuma is still in the chair. F.I.S.T. takes over and gets the heat on Necro…chain of submissions by everyone but Brain Damage, who doesn’t know submissions but straight punched Icarus in the face to break it all up. DMK are killing everyone in F.I.S.T. with strikes, but it’s not enough to keep Team F.I.S.T. from advancing in 12 minutes when Chuck lays out Toby with an Awful Waffle of doom. “Death Match Kings!” chant to send out the losing team.

6. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen, Lince Dorado & Helios [The Future is Now] vs. Kota Ibushi, KUDO & Michael Nakazawa [Team DDT]: Lince has new boots, do not fear, Internet. He starts it off with Michael, slipping all over until Lince wipes him dry. Ibushi gets in and tears it up…and yeah, words cannot describe DDT love right now. Michael lined up Equinox and Helios together on the mat at one point, poured oil all over them…then ran, did a double stomp on Equinox, then slipped into a senton on Helios. Really fast paced stuff here, hard to keep up. Triple german suplexes by Future is Now. Ibushi moonsault out of nowhere!!!! Michael went for the mist but Equinox chopped his throat, allowing Michael I choke on it. The Future is Now advance when Equinox hits the CHIKARA Special on Michael in 17-ish. Crowd booed the DDT loss big time.

7. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: Mike Quackenbush, Jorge “Skayde” Rivera & Johnny Saint [The Masters of a Thousand Holds] vs. Delirious, Hallowicked & Frightmare [Incoherence]: Skayde and Frightmare open it up, a good chance to see what the young rookie is made of. Skayde stretched him out but Frightmare hit a nifty little dive. Hallowicked and Quack square off and go even with one another in some killer stuff, then Saint and Delirious do some chain wrestling. A lot of really neat technical stuff all around, Johnny Saint catches Delirious in some sort of wacky clutch in 16:43, moving the Masters of a Thousand Holds. The Masters of a Thousand Holds vs Team Uppercut tomorrow night!

8. King of Trios 2009 ~ Opening Round: Vin Gerard, STIGMA & Colin Delaney [The UnStable] vs. Al Snow, ??? & Glacier [The Cold Front]: All members of The UnStable have their trendy heel ’staches in tact. Glacier and Al Snow have separate entrances, complete with “WHAT DOES EVERYBODY WAAAAANT?!” music. “HEAD!” and “WELCOME BACK!” chants galore for Snow. Third partner…Al Snow offers Head, Chikarason won’t allow it. Avatar? Snow says no. Shinobi? Snow says to shut up. Leif Cassidy? Al Snow almost takes out Louden, Bryce and Chikarason. The Amazing Red? He’s not here! Green Ant? He’s not here! D’Lo Brown? HE’S HERE! D’LO! Holy crap, is he over. Crowd chants “YOU GOT FIRED!” at Colin, D’Lo kinda asks the crowd to hush jokingly. Fun stuff, D’Lo and Snow are having one hell of a time and looking good in the process. UnStable gang up on Al Snow, all three members putting it to him in the biggest way. All three members of the UnStable hit the Lo Down on Snow, with STIGMA doing an especially good head wag. D’Lo hits the Sky High on Colin, but Colin backslides D’Lo in 26 minutes to move the UnStable on to tomorrow night. Lo Down on Colin after the match to send the fans home happy.

Fantastic beginning to the weekend! Catch everyone tomorrow.

Today’s King of Trios matchup is arguably the most exciting on paper, and it’s a battle between two high flying and hard hitting trios that are sure to bring an incredible match to the table. The Future is Now haven’t had much luck in tag action yet, losing every tag match they’ve been in since officially forming their unit back in December – a win over Team DDT in the first round would really help put them on the right track towards success. What will happen when the punches of Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen and the deadly kicks of KUDO meet one another? Or the graceful flying of both Kota Ibushi and Helios cross paths? Will Michael Nakazawa spear young Lince Dorado out of his boots and leave him in a oily heap on the mat? Find out in just TEN DAYS when King of Trios 2009 hits south Philadelphia!

After a bit of morning-time hesitation, the CHIKARA office has finally let out today’s first round matchup, and it looks to be a battle between two of the deadliest and most dangerous teams in the entire lineup. Team F.I.S.T. has certainly been proving themselves to be killers with this new mean streak, most notably seeing Chuck Taylor putting Worker Ant on the shelf permanently back in Reading last month and threatening to put the rest of The Colony away. Their strength will be tested right out of the gate on night one as the Death Match KingsNecro Butcher, Toby Klein and Brain Damage are likely to come out swinging for the fences. The winner of this has to be a heavy favorite heading on to the next two nights, the only question is “Who will walk out on top?”
