This past weekend was a huge step forward in the career of Lince Dorado – he’d had two successful years since debuting, achieving a lot in a short amount of time. King of Trios victory, winning the first ever Loteria Letal, countless singles wins over big names. However, 2009 hasn’t treated Lince all that great, as he’s just been stuck in the middle of the pack as “just another guy”. That was, until the annual Cibernetico match came around; Lince seized the moment and managed to not only survive to be one of the last few standing, but had two big consecutive eliminations over Jigsaw and Player Dos. His reward for eliminating a former and the current Young Lions Cup holders? A shot at the Cup for himself, as Lince and Dos square off in Philadelphia on the season finale. Can Lince grab the proverbial brass ring and end 2009 off with a bang?

CHIKARA has started their annual Video Contest, asking users to submit their highlight reels for Season Eight. Get your entries up on YouTube and submitted to CHIKARA by November 21st, and you could win a huge box of prizes including a double-scoop of Los Ice Creams masks!

The other day, we made a promise that we’d get everyone caught up on the recent non-Cibernetico related evolutions on October’s cards in Easton and Philadelphia. Have we ever let you down? Don’t mention the failed launch of that new redesign (we’re still coming out with that, by the way, just you wait!), and let’s just go with the popular answer of “never, you love us!” Onward with the matches:

“An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World” ~ October 17, 2009 in Easton, PA

While we have what’s likely our main event in the form of the Campeonatos de Parejas defense of The Colony vs. The Roughnecks, the rest of this card has unfolded in quite unique fashion. The most notable additions have seen the Super Smash Bros. competing in singles action, both with quite hefty challenges ahead of them. Young Lions Cup champion Player Dos is going to be defending his title against Incoherence’s crazed mini-demon Frightmare, who has been on quite the tear in singles competition this year. He’ll be looking to prove that his first round bounce in the YLC tournament back in August was a fluke; he already avenged his loss to Brendan Michael Thomas, and taking the cup away from the winner of said tournament would only solidify how much of a fluke that was. Meanwhile, Player Uno has been attempting to prove that he’s not playing games anymore, and has targeted the cream of the crop in CHIKARA, Claudio Castagnoli, to prove that he’s serious. This is arguably Uno’s biggest singles bout to date in CHIKARA, and while he’s had some big singles wins over top Wrestle Factory talent in the past, nothing’s been quite as big as the co-head trainer.

Also on this show, we’re going to see a singles match that’s nearly two years in the making. Jigsaw was set to take on Gran Akuma in Easton in October, a continuation of their rivalry that’s brewed to a head in 2009. However, Akuma’s injury that kept him off of the September shows was re-aggravated while on the comeback trail. When word hit the CHIKARA locker room, a certain rudo that Jigsaw has a lot of past with stepped up to the plate – STIGMA. These two have a long history with one another, dating back to their days as the much beloved ShaneSaw team. They had their problems with one another in late 2007, and since that time, Jigsaw left and returned while the former Shane Storm turned his back on the fans and joined Vin Gerard’s UnStable. These two have a lot of unsettled beef with one another, and it’s long overdue that they step in the ring to do battle one on one.

The hunt for three points never quite ends, and while it’s been some time since UltraMantis Black and Crossbones have made an attempt to add on to the one point that they gained in Japan back in June against Shadow WX and Yuichi Taniguchi, the original Order of the Neo-Solar Temple are back on the ball and looking to shoot to the top. Their opponents on October 17th, the newest Colony duo of Green Ant and Carpenter Ant. Will the new hormigas be able to get the ball rolling towards a title shot against their fellow Colony members, or are Mantis and Bones going to establish dominance while Delirious is off in Japan?

“Cibernetico Incredible” ~ October 18, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA

Many expected this to be one of the big title matches coming up towards the end of the year, and while this may have a set of champions involved if Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood can snatch the belts from The Colony the night prior, this match between two rudo duos will not be for the Campeonatos de Parejas. No matter what the results of the defense is in Easton, The Osirian Portal are looking to get the ball rolling towards getting the gold back after dropping the belts in Nashua last month, and there’d be no better way to start that off than to get their first point against the Roughnecks.

Two more duos are also looking to grab up some valuable points this weekend, and they’re both quite new to the CHIKARA scene. The Badd Boys have have been flirting with the company for a while – unexpectedly showing up on one of the Big Japan dojo events hosted while CHIKARA was overseas in June – and finally made their debut in West Springfield last month when they put away Fire Ant and Green Ant. This time, the challenge is a bit different; the red hot Dasher Hatfield has been knocking wins out of the park since his debut. His search for a partner ended when a young man by the name of Sugar Dunkerton put his name out there to help Dasher on his quest for three points. It’ll be interesting to see what Dunkerton brings to the table in Philly, as this will be his CHIKARA debut.

One small change to a previously announced match – Atsuko Emoto has been pulled from the ladies’ tag in Philly and replaced with Bullfight Sora, a Big Japan women’s wrestler who has incredible similarities to Emoto. Not much to say, really.

Oh, hey! Did you notice things look a little different around here? Hope you like it, because trust us, it was a lot of work. Enough about us, let’s talk CHIKARA…

The sixth annual Torneo Cibernetico is beginning to unfold, and the “incredibles” theme has already made things quite interesting. Only two members have been announced for each squad, but the teams see two of CHIKARA’s top tecnico squads up against one another – Campeon de Parejas Soldier Ant captains a team with “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush, while Fire Ant is the head of a team that sees him alongside Jigsaw. With six more teams set to be split amongst the two squads, it’s going to be quite interesting to see how things unfold.

Meanwhile, the night prior in Easton will see the return of Brad and Chad Baddthe Badd Boys – who made a powerful debut in West Springfield a few weeks back in manhandling Green Ant and Fire Ant. At “An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World”, they see a slightly bigger challenge as The Future is Now representatives Helios and Lince Dorado step up to the Badd Challenge. Points are in play here; who’s gonna walk out one step closer to a shot at The Colony? Find out on October 17th!

Our good buddy Richard Parker is running another bus trip – two, in fact! Check here for info on the trip from New York City to Philly for October’s “Cibernetico Incredible”, and how to land a sweet discount if you choose to take the trip to both the Cibernetico and November’s Dragon Gate USA event. A fun time for all CHIKARA fans; if you’re in the NYC metro area, definitely check out this steal of an offer.

In a blog that may have some foreshadowing towards the upcoming Cibernetico, Player Uno speaks out and sends a message to his teammate, reminding him that Uno is the one that made him who he is.

The 180th episode of CHIKARA’s Podcast-a-Go-Go sees clips from this year’s Rey de Voladores tournament that took place over King of Trios weekend in March. Check out both first round matches!

ForTheCup

Following the events of the Young Lions Cup where Player Dos defeated Colin Delaney to win the cup, Dos’ tag team partner Player Uno didn’t appear to be particularly pleased. Dos actually defeated Uno en route to the tournament final and Uno, not willing to be just a stepping stone for Dos’ singles career, asked for a title match against his buddy. Leonard F. Chikarason has granted this request and the match will go down in Nashua, as the Super Smash Bros. will collide with the title on the line. In their run as Campeones de Parejas, Uno and Dos lost the belts in their first defence. Will Dos suffer a similar fate as a singles competitor or will he repeat his win over Uno?

Donkoder

At the Young Lions Cup weekend the mysterious robotic wrestler known as Vökoder made his CHIKARA debut, running through numerous wrestlers before falling to the joint efforts of Player Dos and Soldier Ant. Not deterred by the pinfall loss, Vökoder’s back for more as he will be participating on the Nashua card. His opponent is a man who recently embraced his rudo ways and turned on his tag team partner Hydra – Tim Donst. This match is interesting as it pits one rudo vs. another, but it shows that whatever Vökoder’s after, he’s not interested in forming any bonds with current CHIKARA roster members and he’s willing to run through any and all competition to get what he wants. Will Donst be able to show his “true self” now he’s turned to the dark side, or will Vökoder continue his habit of running through opponents in rapid time?

I made a video of CHIKARA guys doing awesome wrestling and moves and the like. And I like it.

Yes indeed. Three more matches on the cards for the upcoming shows in just a couple of weeks!

SuperTemple

The first match added to the New England weekend will take place on the West Springfield show and sees the new Young Lions Cup Champion Player Dos return to tag team competition alongside Player Uno as the Super Smash Bros., as they will be taking on Order of the Neo-Solar Temple members Delirious and UltraMantis Black. With many seeing the SSB as being on a collision course, the Order will be intending to rebound after falling in the 4-way elimination tag at the Young Lions Cup and taking advantage of any animousity or jealousy between Uno and Dos would have to be a primary objective. However, Uno and Dos cannot be counted out as they are former Campeones and have shown in the past that they can overcome any issues to succeed as a duo.

TenManTag

Secondly, Nashua will play host to a tremendously wrestle-tastic ten-man tag featuring a number of men who’ve never even teamed before, and a couple who CHIKARA fans are just getting familiar with, as The Future Is Now members Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen and Lince Dorado will be joining forces with Dasher Hatfield, Green Ant and Carpenter Ant against Vin Gerard, STIGMA, Colin Delaney, Jagged & Shane Matthews. While Jimmy and Lince are well-versed in CHIKARA’s signature multi-man tags, having wrestled numerous trios, atomicos and even Ciberneticos in their time, their team-mates are not so experienced. This will mark Green Ant’s third match in CHIKARA and Carpenter Ant’s second, and Carpenter’s in-ring debut was a singles match. Dasher Hatfield is not much more experienced, as most of his CHIKARA matches have been singles bouts and any forays into team matches haven’t yielded much success. On the other hand, their opponents are made up of two factions – 2.0 and the UnStable – and both are extremely experienced in this sort of match. It should also be noted that Green Ant and Carpenter Ant don’t appear to have been getting on well as of late, so they can hardly be considered a cohesive Colony unit. It’ll be the leadership of Lince and Jimmy that decides whether the tecnicos sink or swim in what should be quite the exciting little match.

SolarNecks

Finally, the Order will also have a tag match in Nashua, as Delirious and Mantis will once again be looking to pick up a win, this time against Roughnecks members Eddie Kingston and Grizzly Redwood. This match is quite interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, Grizzly Redwood is currently one half of a championship contending tag team, as Grizz and Brodie Lee await the surviving Campeones coming out of the New England weekend, and while Brodie has often treated Grizz like a “little brother”, Kingston has shown little tolerance for Redwood’s physical inadequacies, often throwing him around and using him as a weapon. It is also a “rematch” of sorts from February, as Mantis has a chance to get revenge on the Roughnecks for preventing the Order from participating in King of Trios. Not only that, but it almost revives the Incoherence vs. Roughnecks feud, although Delirious being brainwashed changes the situation just a little bit. However, the most important thing – at least from the perspective of any Order fan – has to be that a win here and a win over the Super Smash Bros. would do wonders for getting the Order a title shot in the very near future. Both of their opponents in New England have issues, with the SSB perhaps having problems with jealousy and the Roughnecks not being on the exact same page, so Mantis has to think 2 points here are at least attainable.

Over two months ago at King of Trios the major story of the weekend was obviously the rise of F.I.S.T. and their victory in the finals against the popular Team Uppercut. However, another notable occurance over those three days was the emergence of Super Smash Bros. member Player Dos as a true singles threat following an impressive showing in the Rey de Voladores tournament, where he pinned ROH star Austin Aries and took DDT sensation Kota Ibushi to the limit. Come mid-August, Dos is gonna try and replicate that success but actually go all the way this time, as he will be participating in this year’s Young Lions Cup. This will be his second YLC performance after he entered last year’s, a tournament in which he also came very close as he was the last man to fall to Vin Gerard in the first night 6-way elimination match. Not only that, but to earn a spot in that match Dos (or Stupefied at the time) had to defeat Jimmy Olsen – aka Equinox, the current holder of the Young Lions Cup. This will be Dos’ biggest chance yet to show that he is not the “nearly man” of CHIKARA and it’s not a chance he’ll be eager to pass up.

Colin Delaney’s blogging and he’s not a happy bunny!

No real progress on the results front from the Japanese shows, unfortunately, but hopefully BJW will release something informative shortly. Piecing together bits and bobs from various Twitter accounts, it appears that all of the CHIKARA wrestlers were victorious on the D-DASH show (where Chuck Taylor wrestled Yuji Okabayashi, The Colony wrestled Shinobu & Shinya Ishikawa and UltraMantis Black wrestled Daisuke Masaoka), whereas on the Hama Pro show 2.0 defeated Shinya Ishikawa & Yoshihito Sasaki and Mantis, Crossbones & Buta Gunso (Abdullah Kobayashi) lost to Pierre, Daisuke Sekimoto & Western Tiger. Take them all with a pinch of salt until something more concrete comes out, though!

Two teams looking to start from scratch in the CHIKARA tag scene will clash in Philadelphia, as the Super Smash Bros. of Player Uno and Player Dos will tackle the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple’s UltraMantis Black and Crossbones. The former failed to win a 4-way tag match on the last show in Philadelphia while the Order fell in the 2009 King of Trios tag team gauntlet match. One factor that must be considered is Delirious, who the Order kidnapped last month and no word on his status has been given since. Will Delirious make his presence felt in Philly? And regardless of that, will his Incoherence buddies Hallowicked and Frightmare be looking to gain some vengeance on Mantis and Crossbones for their sneak attack in Philly?

The latest match for Easton’s “Aniversario Yin” has been confirmed, and it’s quite the special atomico – in their last match before their huge mask vs. hair match, Fire Ant and Soldier Ant align with former Campeones de Parejas The Super Smash Bros. to square off against The Osirian Portal and returning beloved rudos Los Ice Creams. There’s a ton of history here between these squads: the Osirian Portal were the team that snuck the belts away from the Super Smash Bros. last October at second night of “The Global Gauntlet”; the Colony were the team that came inches away from taking those belts for themselves back at “Revelation X” in January. Also notable is Player Dos’ recent success in last month’s Atomico match, defeating Buck Hawke at “Behind the 8 Ball”. Will he fly high and take home the win for the tecnicos? Find out on May 23rd when Aniversario Weekend 2009 takes off!

Also, last second addition – are you in the NYC metro area and interested in attending “Aniversario Yin”? Hit up Richard Parker, the head of the CHIKARA Fans Bus Trips, for info on the bus trip to this event and the DGUSA event on 7/25 in Philly! All info can be found here.

A unique staple of CHIKARA history – the Incredibles tag match – sees its return in Easton as four teams split up and face off in an atomico that should see insane action on all sides! Former Campeones de Parejas the Super Smash Bros., The UnStable, The Fabulous Two and The Sea Donsters will all be forced to square off against one another. One team sees Player Dos, “Marvelous” Mitch Ryder, and two men that have had their differences recently, STIGMA andTim Donst. The other side shall see, obviously, Player Uno, “The Red Romeo” Buck Hawke, Vin Gerard and Hydra. A fantastic addition to what looks to be one of the more exciting cards in recent CHIKARA memory!

There are a few historical notes regarding these matches. Possibly the most notable case of an Incredibles match causing a team to fall apart would be ShaneSaw, as Jigsaw and Hydra defeated UltraMantis Black and Shane Storm in late 2007 and the two never teamed again after that. On the other side of the coin, just last year in Streamwood the Super Smash Bros. clashed in a similar 8-man tag and the following night in Ohio they become Los Campeones, proving that the match can either strengthen or weaken a pairing. There’s also the potential for “civil war”, as the teams comprise of both tecnicos and rudos. While there are no real outstanding examples of this in CHIKARA (outside of Lince Dorado in last year’s Cibernetico), you’d have to imagine Tim Donst and STIGMA, who have been great rivals since STIGMA injured Donst in January, will have a hard time getting along.

fisttrios

As we move away from King of Trios, it’s only right that this particular news update opens with the above picture taken just moments after F.I.S.T. of Gran Akuma, Icarus and Chuck Taylor won the 2009 King of Trios tournament. Credit goes to CHIKARAFans friend and Hollywood sensation Lyle C. Williams!

4corners

The first match has been added to the return to the Arena in Philadelphia next month and will see a 4-Way Elimination Match between 2 Canadian teams, 3 Americans and a STIGMA. Last night at King of Trios Player Dos had the biggest match of his career as he fell in a fast-paced battle to DDT sensation Kota Ibushi in the final of the 2009 Rey de Voladores tournament. However, in April it will be back to tag action for Dos as he teams once again with Player Uno as the Super Smash Bros. The two will come into the shows with some momentum after impressive non-tournament showings this past weekend and will surely be looking towards gaining enough points to contend for Los Campeonatos, titles they once held. However, they will have to contend with a number of serious challengers.

Cheech & Cloudy failed to leave the Tag Gauntlet last night with any points but have challenged for the tag belts numerous times in the past and they will not be willing to go down without a fight. Similarly resiliant are Colin Delaney and STIGMA of the UnStable, who had an impressive run alongside Vin Gerard in King of Trios before falling in the semi-finals. This pairing is the only one of the four to have participated in the previous 4-way back in November. They failed to win in that particular match and know that a repeat performance will not go down well with Gerard.

Wrapping up the lineup is the popular 2.0 combo of Jagged and Shane Matthews, returning to CHIKARA once again. While extremely charismatic and huge favourites of the CHIKARA faithful, the win/loss record of the Canadian duo is not the best as they have never come close to qualifying for a title shot. Will this be more of the same or will they shock the world and – as they hypothetically could do – attain the 3 points they need to challenge the Portal? All of these questions will be answered on April 26!
