…now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the 2009 CHIKARA Fans Awards!

After months of debate, nomination, voting, etc., we’ve finally reached the big day. The 2009 CHIKARA Fans Awards voting has completed, and we have the winners below. Enjoy!

MATCH OF THE YEAR: Kota Ibushi vs. Nick Jackson vs. El Generico vs. Jigsaw, “King of Trios 2009: Night Two” – 36%
Second Place: Chuck Taylor & Icarus [F.I.S.T.] vs. Fire Ant & Soldier Ant [The Colony] (Lucha de Apuestas), “Aniversario Yang” – 32%
Third Place: Mike Quackenbush & Jigsaw vs. Claudio Castagnoli & Bryan Danielson, “Hiding in Plain Sight” – 15%

Rey de Voladores has always been a tournament that provided for some spectacular matches in the opening rounds. Four way flyer exhibitions have their ways of mystifying the crowds. But when the CHIKARA office made the call to move the tournament to King of Trios weekend to take advantage of the sheer talent that would be available after the first round of the Trios tournament ended, no one could’ve seen a match like this coming. Four of the best junior heavyweights in the world today squared off and lit the ECW Arena on fire, not only giving every single person in the match a bit more exposure, but setting the standard that every CHIKARA multi-man match had to live up to for the rest of the year.
2008 Winner: Fire Ant vs Vin Gerard, “Young Lions Cup VI: Night Three”
2007 Winner: Chris Hero vs Mike Quackenbush, “Aniversario?”

SHOW OF THE YEAR: “King of Trios 2009: Night Two” – 39%
Second Place: “Aniversario Yang” – 24%
Third Place: “Hiding in Plain Sight” – 18%

For the second year in a row, the show with the Match of the Year also wins Show of the Year. You’d be hard pressed to find a better show in CHIKARA’s history than the second night of this year’s King of Trios tournament. The Rey de Voladores four-way matches. The epic rematch between F.I.S.T. and The F1RST Family. An awesome Inter Species Wrestling title match that saw the return of Twiggy to CHIKARA rings. Oh, and some match with some guys that did uppercuts against a trio of dudes that know a few holds. You might’ve heard of it.
2008 Winner: “Young Lions Cup VI: Night Three”
2007 Winner: “Cibernetico and Robin”

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Player Dos – 31%, 85 votes
Second Place: Claudio Castagnoli – 31%, 84 votes
Third Place: Fire Ant – 19%

In one of the closest races in CHIKARA Fans awards history, coming down to literally a single vote, current Young Lions Cup champion Player Dos is the 2009 CHIKARA Fans Wrestler of the Year. A man that excelled in singles competition this year, Dos really broke out and became his own man. Despite the tiff with his partner Player Uno, it seems that the Super Smash Bros. have quite the power in their possession, and perhaps 2010 will see the first ever repeat Campeones de Parejas and simultaneous CdP/YLC champion.
2008 Winner: Vin Gerard
2007 Winner: Claudio Castagnoli

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR: Fire Ant and Soldier Ant [The Colony]
Second Place: Ophidian & Amasis [The Osirian Portal] – 24%
Third Place: UltraMantis Black & Delirious [The Order of the Neo-Solar Temple] – 11%

This year was undoubtedly the Year of the Ant. Overcoming incredible adversity – losing a comrade in Worker Ant, being misled by both Pinkie “Carpenter ‘Pink’ Ant” Sanchez and a Big Japan trainee, facing the challenges that both F.I.S.T. and the Osirian Portal gave – The Colony had their strongest year yet, running through the ranks of the CHIKARA tag division to win the Campeonatos de Parejas. No one else could’ve deserved this award, and we’re glad it went to the right team.
2008 Winners: Ophidian and Amasis [The Osirian Portal]
2007 Winners: Cheech and Cloudy

TRIO OF THE YEAR: Icarus, Gran Akuma & Chuck Taylor [F.I.S.T.] – 70%
Second Place: UltraMantis Black, Crossbones & Delirious [The Order of the Neo-Solar Temple] – 12%
Third Place: Fire Ant, Soldier Ant & Worker/Green Ant [The Colony] – 11%

Likewise, no trio deserved to win this award more than F.I.S.T. While they had their drawbacks in straight tag team action, with Chuck Taylor and Icarus losing their hair to the Colony, no other team competed better in Trios action than F.I.S.T. It’s fitting that the team that won King of Trios, making current WWE prospect Bryan Danielson tap out in the process, wins this award. Congrats to the friends in similar tights!
2008 and 2007 Winners: Fire Ant, Soldier Ant & Worker Ant [The Colony]

MOMENT OF THE YEAR: Das Brüderschaft Form, “Three-Fisted Tales” – 61%
Second Place: F.I.S.T. Wins KOT as Danielson Taps, “King of Trios 2009: Night Three” – 14%
Third Place:Hydra Says Goodbye, “Throwing Life’s Instructions Away” – 13%

The final moment of the year was certainly the biggest, as it was the climax to a whole year of speculation. Who were these men in white? What is this “war” that they’ve promised is coming? What is their reason for invading CHIKARA? What’s up with all of the weird events in CHIKARA with characters from “the future”? All the questions were answered, and newer ones were created, in just the blink of an eye, setting up what’s sure to be the focus of 2010.
2008 Winner: Fire Ant Wins the YLC, “Young Lions Cup VI: Night Three”
2007 Winner: Mike Quackenbush finally defeats Chris Hero, “Aniversario?”

PROMO OF THE YEAR: “I don’t respect you!” – Eddie Kingston, “Three-Fisted Tales” – 29%
Second Place: “I’m the luckiest man on the face of this earth.” – Hydra, “Throwing Life’s Instructions Away” – 27%
Third Place: “…” – 2.0, “Aniversario Yin” – 23%

It wasn’t a very notable year for promos in CHIKARA, despite it being arguably the best year when it comes to sheer storytelling. However, if you’re going to depend on anyone to cut a scathing promo that just about anyone can be riled up by, it’s Eddie Kingston. He delivered in a huge way at the end of the year, providing incredible foreshadowing into the moment of the year, and proved that he was the one that was right about everything in CHIKARA all along…that Claudio Castagnoli didn’t deserve the respect he got.
2008 Winner: “The world is cold…bundle up.” by Eddie Kingston, “Tragedy and Triumph”
2007 Winner: Eddie Kingston, “Maximum Overdraft”

“OUCH!” OF THE YEAR: Player Dos German Suplexes Lince Into the Steps, “Three-Fisted Tales” – 32%
Second Place: Chuck Taylor Retires Worker Ant, “If The Airplane is Snowed In…” – 25%
Third Place: Chuck Taylor’s Omega Driver Through a Table on Soldier Ant, “Aniversario Yang” – 20%

No words can describe it. Just read the description, man. Come on. You wanna take that bump? Didn’t think so.
2008 Winner: Shane Storm’s Nose Broken…Again, “Two Eyebrows are Better Than One”

…see the rest after the jump!

Two huge matches were announced in the past 24 hours that are huge ways to wrap up the conclusion to Season Eight of CHIKARA action. First up in Easton, Mike Quackenbush, Claudio Castagnoli and Jorge “Skayde” Rivera – the trio of CHIKARA maestros that have had hands in the training of every CHIKARA Wrestle Factory alum – are going to take on The Order of the Neo-Solar Temple’s UltraMantis Black, Crossbones and Delirious. The Temple were given this match as punishment for the huge headache that they’ve caused Leonard F. Chikarason all year, and this form of payback may be the most painful for the rudos as they’re encountering a true dream team. If they’re to pull off the huge upset victory, it would be an achievement the likes of which have never been predicted in CHIKARA in the past.

The next day in Philadelphia at “Three-Fisted Tales”, it’s a title match that co-main-evented the first event of the 2009 CHIKARA calendar year: The Colony, on the champion side this time, defend the Campeonatos de Parejas against The Osirian Portal. This is the third title match between these two this season, and the first two were memorable encounters that saw both teams take each other to the limit. It’ll be no different this time around; will the Portal regain the gold that was taken from them in Nashua back in September, or can the Colony take two of three in both the match and the series?

Also noteworthy: Sara del Rey has written a blog here, clearly outlining her frustrations with the current women’s division in CHIKARA. 2009 was supposed to be a year where she was promised the top female talent from around the world, but she steamrolled over everyone CHIKARA threw her way and has laid out an open challenge for season finale weekend. Who’s going to step up and accept? We’ll find out soon, hopefully.

This past weekend was a huge step forward in the career of Lince Dorado – he’d had two successful years since debuting, achieving a lot in a short amount of time. King of Trios victory, winning the first ever Loteria Letal, countless singles wins over big names. However, 2009 hasn’t treated Lince all that great, as he’s just been stuck in the middle of the pack as “just another guy”. That was, until the annual Cibernetico match came around; Lince seized the moment and managed to not only survive to be one of the last few standing, but had two big consecutive eliminations over Jigsaw and Player Dos. His reward for eliminating a former and the current Young Lions Cup holders? A shot at the Cup for himself, as Lince and Dos square off in Philadelphia on the season finale. Can Lince grab the proverbial brass ring and end 2009 off with a bang?

CHIKARA has started their annual Video Contest, asking users to submit their highlight reels for Season Eight. Get your entries up on YouTube and submitted to CHIKARA by November 21st, and you could win a huge box of prizes including a double-scoop of Los Ice Creams masks!

The first full team of confirmed participants for the 2009 King of Trios tournament has been announced, and it should be a surprise to no one to see that the Osirian Portal, complete with their muscle Escorpion Egipcio, are going to make a strong play to establish themselves as the top stable in CHIKARA with a win of the King of Trios tournament. Of course, the Portal have a lot on their plate before the tournament preparations can even begin, with their one fall Campeonatos de Parejas defense against The Colony coming up in just ten days at “Revelation X”. We’ll soon see if the Portal can still hold their place as the most dominant force in CHIKARA.

The January 25 card grows by the day, as just added to the card this afternoon is a singles match never before seen in CHIKARA, as Incoherence member Delirious will take on “The King of Diamonds” Eddie Kingston. While the two have never wrestled a singles match in CHIKARA, they have clashed quite a few times in tag team matches, as Delirious obviously took Hallowicked’s side during the 2007 Hallowicked vs. Eddie Kingston feud. One of these matches, at the “Aniversario!” show, saw Kingston assault Delirious after the match with a backdrop driver. Now that Kingston has apparently sided with Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood, current targets for Incoherence, Kingston could be looking to take out Delirious to put the tecnicos on the back foot in this feud.

- Escorpion Egipcio will be barred from the building for the Osirian Portal vs. Colony contest at the request of the Colony.

In a late update to the official CHIKARA blog, Worker Ant has spoken on behalf of his associates Fire Ant and Soldier Ant, explaining the grudge between the Colony and the Osirian Portal before announcing what the stipulation will be for their upcoming title match. In short, Worker has selected a one-fall contest with Escorpion Egipcio barred from the building. The complete post is as follows:

1/13/2009: After all this time, things are finally going The Colony’s way. Together, Fire and Soldier have picked up a mindblowing 7 points (OMGZ!) Plus, we’re on track to qualify for King of Trios 2009 in Reading next month! When my fellow ants become Campeones, and we sweep King of Trios, all that will be left is for me to finally get a run in the Young Lions Cup tournament! Then, people will realize that it’s 2009 that will be the Year of the Ant.

Before all that goes down, there’s some business to address as it relates to “Revelation X”, and the long overdue title shot with The Osirian Portal. Since my boys Fire Ant and Soldier Ant have earned more points than any other tag team in CHIKARA history, Leonard F. Chikarason has decided to extend special consideration for this accomplishment. We can have the title match anyway we want it. So, we had a conference back at the anthill today to talk over the opportunity, and reflect on some of the things that went down back in December at “Face With a View” and “Duel and Duality.”

In Easton, things went a little sour. Grizzly Redwood attacked my knee, and left me unable to compete at “Duel and Duality”, a move that almost cost Fire and Soldier all their points. It would have taken just one loss to wipe away everything they had built up. It wasn’t until later we found out that he was working under instructions from Amasis. Later that same night, Amasis interfered in Fire’s match with Escorpion Egipcio and tried to screw up Soldier’s chances of beating Ophidian. As if that weren’t enough, two nights later, the members of the Osirian Portal tried to interfere in our match with 2.0, and it was only my mad crutch-swinging skills that saved the day.

So, taking all this into account, we’ve made up our minds. Here’s what we want come “Revelation X” , to give Fire and Soldier the best chance possible to bring home the gold. For starters, the title match will be just one fall. It’s do or die time, Egyptians. Also, we want Escorpion Egipcio barred from the building. We don’t want any more outside interference, extra help or shenanigans, and this way, we feel like it’ll be a fair fight – just Fire Ant and Soldier Ant vs. Ophidian and Amasis. That’s they way we want it – Book it, Chikarason!

Following the announcement of the qualifying matches for King of Trios, the first actual entrant has been confirmed – sort of. According to the CHIKARA MySpace, Leonard F. Chikarason has granted Mike Quackenbush and two mystery wrestlers an automatic spot in the tournament, stating that they deserve it “on reputation alone”. It is currently unknown who the two wrestlers are, although much speculation has been going around regarding Quack’s past alliances…

Finally, Leonard F. Chikarason has also confirmed that “The Funky Pharaoh” Amasis will indeed be cleared to wrestle on the January 25 show, meaning that the #1 contenders to the Osirian Portal’s Campeonatos de Parejas – Fire Ant and Soldier Ant of The Colony – will finally receive their title shot. However, due to the quite absurd number of points that Fire and Soldier have acquired – a total of 7 – an interesting stipulation has been added. The challengers will be able to choose what sort of a match the bout will be, which means that it does not have to be under the traditional Best of 3 Falls rules, a first for the Campeonatos.

In today’s update of wonder, Revelation X will host another tag team contest as CHIKARA’s resident beach boys Cheech & Cloudy will take on the UnStable’s STIGMA and Colin Delaney. STIGMA and Delaney are coming off a loss to their rivals Jigsaw and Mike Quackenbush on the final CHIKARA show of 2008, but Cheech and Cloudy appear to be well back on track in their quest for Los Campeonatos de Parejas following a win in Easton over 2.0.

Today’s addition to the January Philadelphia show sees Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw looking to continue along the road towards a shot at Los Campeonatos de Parejas as they will be going up against UltraMantis Black and Crossbones of the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple. Jigsaw and Quack currently hold a single point after putting aside their differences to defeat STIGMA and Colin Delaney last month, and now Jigsaw has reverted back to his masked persona as Quack requested they would have to be considered a threat by the current Campeones the Osirian Portal. However, Mantis is sure to be in a vile mood after the Order lost their grudge feud to the Sea Donsters, so the rudo duo are unlikely to go down without a fight. Also worth noting is that Mantis played a part in the disintegration of the ShaneSaw tag team in late 2007 and he may look to similarly exploit any fragility in the Quack/Jigsaw bond here.

Speaking of Quack and Jigsaw, check out the latest CHIKARA podcast to see Quack hinting at a special surprise for King of Trios. To view the YouTube link click here!

January 25, 2009 will see another Canadian join the many that have wrestled in CHIKARA in the past, as Sara Del Rey will face a firm test in the form of the wild LuFisto. A former winner of various deathmatch tournaments and holder of titles such as the CZW Iron Man Title, LuFisto is well-travelled and has wrestled in promotions such as SHIMMER, PWG, CZW, IWS and IWA Mid-South, making her a more than suitable challenger for Del Rey, who has been the dominant female performer in the company for well over a year since she ousted Daizee Haze in August 2007.
