This past weekend was a huge step forward in the career of Lince Dorado – he’d had two successful years since debuting, achieving a lot in a short amount of time. King of Trios victory, winning the first ever Loteria Letal, countless singles wins over big names. However, 2009 hasn’t treated Lince all that great, as he’s just been stuck in the middle of the pack as “just another guy”. That was, until the annual Cibernetico match came around; Lince seized the moment and managed to not only survive to be one of the last few standing, but had two big consecutive eliminations over Jigsaw and Player Dos. His reward for eliminating a former and the current Young Lions Cup holders? A shot at the Cup for himself, as Lince and Dos square off in Philadelphia on the season finale. Can Lince grab the proverbial brass ring and end 2009 off with a bang?

CHIKARA has started their annual Video Contest, asking users to submit their highlight reels for Season Eight. Get your entries up on YouTube and submitted to CHIKARA by November 21st, and you could win a huge box of prizes including a double-scoop of Los Ice Creams masks!

The other day, we made a promise that we’d get everyone caught up on the recent non-Cibernetico related evolutions on October’s cards in Easton and Philadelphia. Have we ever let you down? Don’t mention the failed launch of that new redesign (we’re still coming out with that, by the way, just you wait!), and let’s just go with the popular answer of “never, you love us!” Onward with the matches:

“An Optimistic View of a Pessimistic World” ~ October 17, 2009 in Easton, PA

While we have what’s likely our main event in the form of the Campeonatos de Parejas defense of The Colony vs. The Roughnecks, the rest of this card has unfolded in quite unique fashion. The most notable additions have seen the Super Smash Bros. competing in singles action, both with quite hefty challenges ahead of them. Young Lions Cup champion Player Dos is going to be defending his title against Incoherence’s crazed mini-demon Frightmare, who has been on quite the tear in singles competition this year. He’ll be looking to prove that his first round bounce in the YLC tournament back in August was a fluke; he already avenged his loss to Brendan Michael Thomas, and taking the cup away from the winner of said tournament would only solidify how much of a fluke that was. Meanwhile, Player Uno has been attempting to prove that he’s not playing games anymore, and has targeted the cream of the crop in CHIKARA, Claudio Castagnoli, to prove that he’s serious. This is arguably Uno’s biggest singles bout to date in CHIKARA, and while he’s had some big singles wins over top Wrestle Factory talent in the past, nothing’s been quite as big as the co-head trainer.

Also on this show, we’re going to see a singles match that’s nearly two years in the making. Jigsaw was set to take on Gran Akuma in Easton in October, a continuation of their rivalry that’s brewed to a head in 2009. However, Akuma’s injury that kept him off of the September shows was re-aggravated while on the comeback trail. When word hit the CHIKARA locker room, a certain rudo that Jigsaw has a lot of past with stepped up to the plate – STIGMA. These two have a long history with one another, dating back to their days as the much beloved ShaneSaw team. They had their problems with one another in late 2007, and since that time, Jigsaw left and returned while the former Shane Storm turned his back on the fans and joined Vin Gerard’s UnStable. These two have a lot of unsettled beef with one another, and it’s long overdue that they step in the ring to do battle one on one.

The hunt for three points never quite ends, and while it’s been some time since UltraMantis Black and Crossbones have made an attempt to add on to the one point that they gained in Japan back in June against Shadow WX and Yuichi Taniguchi, the original Order of the Neo-Solar Temple are back on the ball and looking to shoot to the top. Their opponents on October 17th, the newest Colony duo of Green Ant and Carpenter Ant. Will the new hormigas be able to get the ball rolling towards a title shot against their fellow Colony members, or are Mantis and Bones going to establish dominance while Delirious is off in Japan?

“Cibernetico Incredible” ~ October 18, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA

Many expected this to be one of the big title matches coming up towards the end of the year, and while this may have a set of champions involved if Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood can snatch the belts from The Colony the night prior, this match between two rudo duos will not be for the Campeonatos de Parejas. No matter what the results of the defense is in Easton, The Osirian Portal are looking to get the ball rolling towards getting the gold back after dropping the belts in Nashua last month, and there’d be no better way to start that off than to get their first point against the Roughnecks.

Two more duos are also looking to grab up some valuable points this weekend, and they’re both quite new to the CHIKARA scene. The Badd Boys have have been flirting with the company for a while – unexpectedly showing up on one of the Big Japan dojo events hosted while CHIKARA was overseas in June – and finally made their debut in West Springfield last month when they put away Fire Ant and Green Ant. This time, the challenge is a bit different; the red hot Dasher Hatfield has been knocking wins out of the park since his debut. His search for a partner ended when a young man by the name of Sugar Dunkerton put his name out there to help Dasher on his quest for three points. It’ll be interesting to see what Dunkerton brings to the table in Philly, as this will be his CHIKARA debut.

One small change to a previously announced match – Atsuko Emoto has been pulled from the ladies’ tag in Philly and replaced with Bullfight Sora, a Big Japan women’s wrestler who has incredible similarities to Emoto. Not much to say, really.

Following the events of the Young Lions Cup where Player Dos defeated Colin Delaney to win the cup, Dos’ tag team partner Player Uno didn’t appear to be particularly pleased. Dos actually defeated Uno en route to the tournament final and Uno, not willing to be just a stepping stone for Dos’ singles career, asked for a title match against his buddy. Leonard F. Chikarason has granted this request and the match will go down in Nashua, as the Super Smash Bros. will collide with the title on the line. In their run as Campeones de Parejas, Uno and Dos lost the belts in their first defence. Will Dos suffer a similar fate as a singles competitor or will he repeat his win over Uno?

At the Young Lions Cup weekend the mysterious robotic wrestler known as Vökoder made his CHIKARA debut, running through numerous wrestlers before falling to the joint efforts of Player Dos and Soldier Ant. Not deterred by the pinfall loss, Vökoder’s back for more as he will be participating on the Nashua card. His opponent is a man who recently embraced his rudo ways and turned on his tag team partner Hydra – Tim Donst. This match is interesting as it pits one rudo vs. another, but it shows that whatever Vökoder’s after, he’s not interested in forming any bonds with current CHIKARA roster members and he’s willing to run through any and all competition to get what he wants. Will Donst be able to show his “true self” now he’s turned to the dark side, or will Vökoder continue his habit of running through opponents in rapid time?

I made a video of CHIKARA guys doing awesome wrestling and moves and the like. And I like it.

The opening round matches are complete for this year’s Young Lions Cup as just moments ago the final matches were confirmed. First, it’s a clash between a CHIKARA debutant and one of CHIKARA’s youngest lions as the pink ‘n’ black attack of Brendan Michael Thomas confronts Incoherence member Frightmare. In the other contest to round off the opening night action, Roughneck member Grizzly Redwood looks to capitalise on his momentum after tag success in Reading, but his opponent El Leonino will not be intending to give him an easy ride in his CHIKARA debut.

Moving onto night 2, the debuting and mysterious Bret Race will be taking on the Midwest’s own Yellow Dog. And finally, expect nothing more than tremendous fast-paced action as Trik Davis goes up against a man he knows very well, Shane Hollister. These men have wrestled numerous times in the past and have been compared to fellow speed style wrestlers Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin. Whether they can live up to that particularly high billing is yet to be seen, but only one will advance to the second round of YLC.

Footage of the Dragon Gate USA debut show, Open the Historic Gate, has been released, showing the events following the CHIKARA tag where YAMATO and Gran Akuma beat down Jigsaw and Mike Quackenbush. That can be viewed by clicking here. As a result of that, just added to the September 6th Chicago show is a grudge tag team match between Quackenbush & Jigsaw and YAMATO & Akuma.

Many people have been asking in recent weeks about the status of this year’s Young Lions Cup and CHIKARA has finally given them the answers they require, as dates and locations for the seventh edition of the tournament have been confirmed. The opening two nights will take place in Easton and the third and final event will occur in Philly in what’s scheduled to be the first Philly show since this past Sunday’s “Aniversario Yang”.

Big Japan has released the upcoming card for the Hama Pro event on June 10. UltraMantis Black and Crossbones team up Buta Gunso (Abdullah Kobayashi as “Sgt. Pork”) against Western Tiger, Pierre and Daisuke Sekimoto. Also on the card is 2.0, as Jagged and Shane Matthews square off with Yoshihito Sasaki and Global Gauntlet vet Shinya Ishikawa. Hopefully footage of this event will surface.

Lastly, the new CHIKARA Podcast-A-Go-Go is out. Hosted by Mike Quackenbush and Bryce Remsburg, featured clips are from the 2008 Cibernetico in Framingham, MA.

Jimmy Olsen vs. Colin Delaney

The challenge was laid down yesterday, and now confirmed on the official CHIKARA website, on April 25th Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen will defend his Young Lions Cup against his former tag team partner and the man who betrayed him, the “Extremely Cute Wrestler” known as Colin Delaney. These two men have only wrestled once in one-on-one competition since Delaney turned on Equinox last September to join the UnStable, a match on CHIKARA’s debut show in Streamwood, which Delaney won following outside interference, so Equinox will be looking to make amends now that the title he fought so hard to win in January is on the line. However, as Colin noted in his blog entry, this is about so much more than the Young Lions Cup. This is a sibling rivalry between two men who entered CHIKARA together just over two years ago as the Olsen Twins, Colin and Jimmy, and that tension will all come to a head in the Palmer Community Center in just over a fortnight.

What’s slightly interesting to note for long-time CHIKARA fans is the parallels in this feud compared to the feud between the Conundrum members Jigsaw and Rorschach many years ago. Rorschach turned on Jigsaw to join the upstart Sweet ‘n’ Sour International (lead by the latest Young Lions Cup Champion Larry Sweeney), while Colin Delaney turned on Jimmy Olsen to join the upstart UnStable (lead by the Young Lions Cup Champion Vin Gerard). This eventually culminated in a match between Jigsaw and Rorschach on March 20, 2005 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, which Jigsaw won. Colin Delaney will not want to replicate this result by falling to the man he deemed to have become “weak” when Colin left for the WWE in 2008.

Also confirmed by CHIKARA after a number of challenges were thrown around a few days ago, former WCW star Glacier will make a first CHIKARA appearance outside of a King of Trios weekend to answer the challenge of Vin Gerard, the leader of the UnStable and a man who has quite a grudge against Glacier. One year ago Glacier made his CHIKARA debut over King of Trios 2008 weekend and competed in a 4-way elimination match on night 3. On that night, Vin Gerard won the contest, last eliminating Glacier, much to the dismay of the fans. Just a few weeks ago the two met again when the Cold Front battled the UnStable in opening round King of Trios action. The UnStable advanced, but Vin got more than enough of Glacier, who seemed to have a Cryonic Kick or two in store for the former Young Lions Cup champion. Engraged, Vin demanded a match with Glacier. Glacier accepted, and the match is on for Philly.

Colin Delaney has just posted a new blog on the official CHIKARA site revolving around his Easton match, which will apparently be against his former partner and “baby brother” Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen – and yes, according to Colin, Jimmy’s Young Lions Cup will be on the line! The updated lineup will be posted when the match is made official, but for now, here’s Colin’s blog:

4/8/2009: The Young Lions Cup…the biggest singles prize CHIKARA has to offer. Held by greats from STIGMA to Vin Gerard. And now, being tainted by the grubby hands of my little brother, Jimmy, the coward hiding under the mask of Equinox. It makes me sick to see, so I called up the offices, I dialed up Leonard F. Chikarason, and I made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

The former Olsen Twins are gonna collide at The Palmer Center in Easton! One night only, it might look like Equinox vs. Delaney, but underneath it’s Olsen vs. Olsen, brother vs. brother, man vs. better man.

The fans in PA were screwed out of this match when we locked up in Chicago last September – they didn’t get to see me pin baby brother’s shoulders to the mat, so lets do it one more time! Only this time…you have something I want. You see, beating Jimmy isn’t enough, because I’ve been beating Jimmy all our lives, and I don’t need to beat him again to prove who the better man is. I just want that shiny Cup he carries around. I want that Young Lions Cup back in The UnStable, back with the group that should be the King of Trios, and back with the group that (after April 26th) will have 3 points, and be on our way to having all the gold in CHIKARA. No one will be ignoring us then!

Little brother, come April 25th, I’m gonna beat you again. And trust me, it’s going to hurt you a lot more than it hurts me.

Also, in DVD-related news, following the release of the King of Trios DVDs next week (April 14th, ladies and gentlemen), Smart Mark Video has agreed to reduce the prices of all CHIKARA DVDs from 2004-2007 from $20 to $15 for a limited time only. CHIKARA has said on the message board that if this proves to be a particularly lucrative venture they may try it more often, so buy buy buy!

Elsewhere, Glacier has accepted Vin Gerard’s challenge for a match later this month.

Happy new year to you all, and we’re back to the regular updates! The first match has been added to the Revelation X show, and it’s a biggy, as for the first time ever CHIKARA will see a ladder match to decide the rightful holder of the Young Lions Cup. The match will be a rematch from the semi-main event of the season finale show, as the former champion Vin Gerard will take on Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen, with the chance that if Gerard wins he will become the first ever two-time holder of the YLC in the cup’s 8 year existence. The match will also be no disqualification, eliminating the chance of any non-finishes, and will end when one man retrieves the prize from above the ring.
